Opportunity Description

Applications are now open for the National Scholarship Program of the Slovak Republic to international students in 2023. The Slovak Republic established this scholarship in 2005 to encourage students, Ph.D., university teachers, researchers, and artists to pursue their studies at higher education institutions and research organizations in Slovakia. The budgets of this Scholarship are from the state budgets of the Slovak Republic and the European Union -NextGenerationEU in the framework of the Investment.

The National Scholarship Program of the Slovak helps Ph.D. students, university teachers, researchers, and artists with their study, research, teaching, and artistic mobility at higher education institutions and research organizations. These scholarships are towards living costs during the stay and travel allowances

Benefits of the National Scholarship Program of Slovak

The scholarship supports international students’ living expenses and travel allowances while studying, conducting research, creating art, or teaching at Slovakian universities. Please read the details of the National Scholarship Program of Slovak as follows:

  • University student of Master’s degree: 400 €/Month
  • Ph.D. student: 734 €/Month
  • University teacher, researcher, and artist:
  1. Applicants who do not have a Ph.D. degree or its equivalent and have less than four years of work experience as a researcher, university teacher, or artist: 734 €/Month
  2. Applicants who have a Ph.D. degree or its equivalent and prove less than ten years of work experience as a researcher, university teacher, or artist: 980 €/Month
  3. Applicants who have a Ph.D. degree or its equivalent and prove more than ten years of work experience as a researcher, university teacher, or artist: 1 050 €/Month
  • Students and Ph.D. students can apply for a travel allowance with their scholarship application. The travel allowance amount is payable by the distance in a straight route between the applicant’s home country and the location of their stay in Slovakia. Please remember that this amount is payable at the end of the student’s stay. The amounts are details in comparison with the distances are as follows:
  1. Up to 350 km: 0 €
  2. More than 350 km, max. 2,000 km: 250 €
  3. Distance more than 2,000 km, max. 7,000 km: 500 €
  4. More than 7,000 km: 1 000 €.
  • Scholarship holders will be compensated the costs related to medical examination and issuing of this confirmation, up to 250 € per scholarship holder, after delivering the original bill issued by the respective medical institution to SAIA, n. o., in Bratislava. *
Important Notes:
  • *Scholarship recipients who are nationalities of countries outside the European Union, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area and whose stay in Slovakia lasts longer than 90 days should submit a confirmation to the foreign police office that they do not suffer from any disease-threatening public health within 30 days from being awarded the temporary residence.
  • Only job experience until the application deadline is included for counting the monthly scholarship amount for researchers, university teachers, and artists.
  • The committee will count the Ph.D. coursework as job experience only for six years.
  • The scholarship recipient may seek assistance from their host institution with housing and other measures associated with coming and remaining on Slovak territory, or they should take care of all the requirements themselves.

Requirements of the National Scholarship Program of Slovak

To apply for the National Scholarship Program of Slovak, all applicants should meet specific criteria set for each category:

Students:

  • Be college students in universities outside of Slovakia
  • Students enrolled in a master’s program at the second level of higher education or students who have finished at least 2.5 years of university coursework in the same study program as the application deadline.
  • Wil receive enrollment at a private, public, or state university in Slovakia during their higher education abroad and will be granted academic mobility to study in Slovakia.

Note: All three requirements must be satisfied. Ph.D. studies are not part of this category (or their equivalent).

Ph.D. Students:

  • D. applicants accepted by a state, public, private university, or research institution in Slovakia can pursue a doctoral program. They are also suitable for academic mobility to study, engage in artistic endeavors, or conduct research while in Slovakia. Examples of such applicants include the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

International university teachers, researchers, and artists:

  • Applicants should be international university professors, researchers, and artists to spend time teaching, doing research, or performing art in Slovakia with a Slovakian office and provide a current certificate of eligibility to conduct research and development.

Required Documents

All applicants should submit the following particular documents needed for the National Scholarship Program of Slovak:

International Students should submit the following:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Motivation letter
  • Detailed study program
  • Two recommendation letters from the university teachers
  • Certification from the applicant’s home university attesting to full-time enrollment of the applicant at the time of application
  • A copy of the applicant’s undergraduate degree, the diploma supplement, and the state examination certificate. (Optional)
  • Admissions letter or invitation letter from the candidate’s host university in Slovakia explaining the duration of the stay.

International Ph.D. Students should submit the following:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Motivation letter
  • Detailed study/research/artistic program
  • Recommendation letter from the candidates’ dissertation supervisor
  • A statement from the applicant’s research organization or home university attesting that the applicant is a regular Ph.D. student as of the application deadline
  • Copy of the candidate’s state examination certificate, Master’s degree, and diploma supplement in a scannable format. (Optional)
  • List of creative endeavors and publications in the necessary format
  • Admission or invitation letter from the candidate’s Slovakian host university or research organization stipulating the stay duration in the proper format.

Documents Requirement for International university Teachers/Researchers/ and Artists:

  • Updated Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Detailed teaching, research, or artistic program
  • Scan of the highest academic degree diploma achieved
  • List of creative endeavors and publications in the necessary format
  • Admission or invitation letter from the applicant’s Slovakian host university or research organization specifying the duration of the stay in the proper format.

Note: Only Slovak or English are acceptable languages for the required documents to submit (fill out) applications and the necessary attachments.
