Italian Government MAECI Scholarships for International Students applications are now open for the 2024/2025 academic year. MAECI –Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation offers fully funded scholarships for international applicants not residing in Italy and Italian nationals living abroad (IRE)  to study their master, PhD, or Italian Language, or conduct research, or attend higher education courses in Art, music,  and dance. These scholarships promote international, cultural, scientific, and technological cooperation. The program also promotes the Italian language and culture, supporting Italy’s economic system worldwide.

What Benefits Do Italian Government Scholarships Provide?

Selected candidates for the Italian Government Scholarships will receive the following benefits:

  • Enrolment and tuition fees exemptions, according to university policy
  • Applicants will receive coverage of health and medical or accidental insurance contracted by MAECI for the entire duration of the grant.
  • A total amount of 9000 (Nine thousand) Euro will be granted to students, which will be paid in 3 installments. The first installment of 4500 Euro after arrival in Italy, 2nd installment of 2500 euro after the confirmation of enrolment and attending the course starting in february 2025, and the third and last installment of 2000 Euro will be paid upon satisfactory performance of the student. The scholarship allowance will be paid directly into the student’s Italian bank account.

Eligibility Criteria for Italian Government Scholarships

Candidates must meet the following requirements to be eligible for this scholarship:

  • Applicant must be an international student not residing in Italy from the list on this page and by Italian citizens living abroad (IRE).
  • Candidate should not be 28 years old for a master’s degree or Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) Programs and Italian Language and Culture Courses.
  • Students applying for Ph.D. programs should be under the age of 30.
  • Applicants for Research Projects under Academic Supervision must be under 40.
  • Candidates who enroll in university courses taught in English must refer to the specific University’s language requirements. Applicants must provide proof of their Italian language proficiency. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the minimum required level is B2.
  • No proof of language proficiency is necessary for Ph.D. programs and Research under academic supervision.

Language Proficiency

Italian Taught courses: Applicants must provide proof of proficiency in the Italian language to enroll in an Italian-taught course. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the minimum required level is B2 (CEFR). In addition, candidates who have taken an Italian-taught course or an Italian language course at University may submit a language certification issued by the course director certifying the required Italian language level.

English Taught courses: Applicants must provide a language certification indicating their English proficiency to enroll in an English-taught course. For candidates from countries where English is the official language, self-certification may also be acceptable. Meanwhile, per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the minimum required level is B2 (CEFR).
Candidates with an English-taught bachelor’s degree may submit a document certifying that their Bachelor’s degree study program was entirely in English. There is no proof needed for that.

Advanced Italian language and culture courses: Applicants for Italian language and culture courses must provide proof of proficiency in the Italian language. The minimum required level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is A2 (CEFR).

Ph.D. programs and Research projects under academic supervision:
For Ph.D. programs and Research under academic supervision, no proof of language proficiency is required.

Types of Available Programs

International candidates can apply for the following types of programs and study levels for the current year under the Italian Government MAECI Scholarships:

Master’s degree: master’s degree grants are valid for a period of study of  9 (nine) months. Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree to get admission to the first year of a master’s degree program; applicants who demonstrate satisfactory academic progress with their first-year exams will get admission to the second year.

Higher education courses in the arts, music, and dance (AFAM): Grants for Higher Education in the Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) are available for 9 (nine) months of study. Meanwhile, applicants must meet the entry requirements and academic qualifications established by the relevant AFAM Institute to be admitted to AFAM.

Ph.D. program:
Grants for Ph.D. programs are available for 9 (nine) months of study. To be admitted to a Ph.D. program in Italy, applicants must meet the University’s entry requirements and academic qualifications and provide a letter of admission to the Ph.D. program from the relevant Italian University.  

Academically supervised research projects:
This type of grant can be awarded to research projects carried out at Italian Research Institutions (for example, the Italian Research Council – CNR, the Italian National Institute of Health – ISS, the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics – INFN, the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics – INAF, The Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research – ISPRA, and others), public or recognized Universities, Museums, and Archives.  

Advanced Italian language and culture courses:
Grants for Italian language and culture courses are available for three months only to students enrolled in an Italian course at a university or an Italian Cultural Institute.
