Opportunity Description

The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (henceforth referred to as the Scholarship) will continue to be offered by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) in order to meet the increasing demand from the global community for Chinese language teachers and to facilitate Chinese language education in other nations.

Outstanding students and currently employed Chinese language teachers may be recommended for study of International Chinese Language Education or related majors at Chinese universities and colleges (hereinafter referred to as “host institutions”) by Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction, and Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad.

Beijing Normal University, the host institution, will offer the following enrollment options for the 2025 academic year: a bachelor’s degree in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages (taught at Zhuhai Campus), a master’s degree in the same field, a one-year academic program, and a one-semester program. The major in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages will be taught at the Zhuhai Campus.

Scholarship Types and Qualifications

Following are the highlights of the scholarship types and requirements:

A. Chinese Language Teacher Program

Doctor’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education:

    • Duration: Up to 4 years (starting September 2025)
    • Requirements: Master’s degree, HSK 6 (240+), HSKK Advanced (65+), 3+ years of teaching experience.
    • Priority: Applicants with a teaching contract or proof of future employment.

Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL):

    • Duration: Up to 2 years (starting September 2025)
    • Requirements: Bachelor’s degree, HSK 6 (220+), HSKK Advanced (65+).
    • Priority: Applicants with a teaching contract or proof of future employment.

Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL):

    • Duration: Up to 4 years (starting September 2025)
    • Requirements: High school diploma, HSK 4 (210+), HSKK Intermediate (60+).

One-Academic-Year Study (Max. 11 months, starting September 2025):

    • TCSOL (Zhuhai Campus): HSK 4 (180+), HSKK score required.
    • Chinese Language & Literature, History, Philosophy: HSK 5 (180+), HSKK Intermediate (60+).
    • Chinese Language Study: HSK 3 (210+), HSKK preferred.

One-Semester Study (Max. 5 months, starting Sep 2025 or Mar 2026):

    • TCSOL (Zhuhai Campus): HSK 4 (180+), HSKK score required.
    • Chinese Language & Literature, History, Philosophy: HSK 5 (180+), HSKK score required.
B. Scholarship for Online Programmes

One-Year Chinese Language Study:

  • Start: September or March
  • Requirements: HSK 3 (180+), HSKK preferred.

One-Semester Chinese Language Study:

  • Start: September or March
  • Requirements: An HSK score is required (no specific level or score).

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must have the following:

  • Non-citizens of China;
  • Must be amicable with the country, not have a criminal history, and follow both the school’s and the Chinese government’s laws and regulations;
  • Must be in good bodily and mental health, with a strong record of academic achievement and behavior;
  • Wanting to work in fields connected to teaching Chinese and other similar fields;
  • Be between the ages of 16 and 35 as of September 1, 2025, with a specific exception for applicants who are undergraduate students and who have an age limit of 25 or 45 if they are Chinese language teachers currently employed.

Concerning Chinese Language Teachers Currently in Employment and Chinese Bridge AWAD Recipients:

  • In-service Chinese language teachers: An employer letter of recommendation and documentation of employment are required for in-service Chinese language teachers.
  • The Chinese Bridge Champions: Individuals who have been awarded the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate in conjunction with Chinese Bridge competitions must forward their scholarship certificates and application materials to the designated host institutions via the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.

  • In accordance with the Guidelines, the Recommending and Host Institutions are required to offer advisory, referral, and enrollment services.

Miscellaneous:

  • Applicants who received a similar scholarship in the past three years are ineligible for the One-Semester or One-Year Study Program.
  • Contact Host Institutions for curriculum, course listings, and enrollment details.
  • Ensure you meet admission criteria and deadlines, submitting all required documents.
  • Degree students must pass an annual assessment per scholarship guidelines.
  • Scholarship will be revoked for failure to pass the pre-enrollment medical exam, unauthorized withdrawal, non-registration, or suspension.
