One of the most well-known programs in the world allowing working, mid-career journalists to take time off from their regular positions to further their studies in journalism is the Reuters Institute’s Journalist Fellowship Program. Applications are open to international journalists for the 2024 Reuters Institute Journalist Fellowship Program.

Participating in this program will deepen your understanding of journalism, the news industry, and your role via independent study, seminars, networking events, and peer discussions. You will work on a project in Oxford that will benefit you, your career, your newsroom, and the larger media sector while there, using what you learn through the fellowship. This program is intended for editors and working journalists who plan to rejoin the industry after a brief stay at the school.

  • The majority of the program’s journalists receive full funding. Successful candidates get payment for their fees and a stipend of £2,000 a month, which will cover their living expenses for lodging, food, and other necessities. The institute will also pay for travel expenses to and from the UK and visa fees.
  • Some Journalist Fellows also work for sponsoring companies with their application procedures and selection standards.

Eligibility Criteria for Reuters Institute Journalist Fellowship

Applicants who wish to apply for this fellowship program should meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum of five years of journalistic experience or equivalent expertise
  • Freelancers are eligible to apply
  • This fellowship program is not open to individuals in public affairs, public relations, or corporate communications.
  • Journalist Fellowships are available worldwide for candidates, including Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific, North America, and Latin America.
  • English language proficiency is not tested, but applicants should be able to understand and participate in discussions in English.

  • First Week:
    • Jump into seminars and discussions on key journalism issues, including misinformation, trust, sustainability, audience engagement, press freedom, etc.
    • Social activities like dinners, drinks, and walks foster camaraderie among participants.
  • Seminars and Conferences:
    • Weekly seminars led by distinguished journalists, editors, industry leaders, and academics.
    • Opportunities to discuss challenges faced in journalism globally and attend conferences organized by academic and industry institutions.
  • Events in Oxford:
    • Attend talks and lectures in Oxford on journalism, media, politics, international relations, cultural studies, technology, etc.
    • Explore events hosted by the Oxford University Media Society, Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford Internet Institute, Oxford Union, and others.
  • The Project:
    • It is not an academic course, but participants spend significant time on a relevant project for their newsroom or the wider industry.
    • Guidance was provided on project planning and accessing available resources.
  • Symposiums:
    • End-of-term symposiums with presentations and panel discussions on a specific theme.
    • Events based on lessons learned in Oxford and professional experiences, open to the public, often held in London.

      • One-page document expressing why you believe you are ready for the fellowship.
      • Explain your decision to work on this project at Reuters Institute and outline your plans for implementing the project upon your return to the newsroom.
    • Resume (PDF):
      • Two-page document detailing your professional and academic background.
      • Include links to relevant work if desired.
    • Reference Letters (PDFs):
      • Two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your work.
      • Include the referee’s full name, work position, relationship to you, and contact information.
      • Each reference letter should not exceed one page in length.
