FAO in Kandahar, Afghanistan, is accepting applications for the position of regional gender specialist. The Regional Gender Specialist will have the following responsibilities:

  • Deploy a strategy plan to help Programming Teams in designing and launching emergency response programs/interventions, needs, and resources that address gender concerns and promote the protection and empowerment of women and girls in rural areas.
  • Respond to requests for gender equality and women’s empowerment guidance, help, and solutions from Regional Coordinators, and give technical recommendations and advice to field initiatives in both development and humanitarian contexts.
  • Coordinate capacity building initiatives such as knowledge sharing, training workshop organizing, awareness raising, seminars and meetings, and the creation of associated materials, online tools, and information kits.
  • Develop training materials, deliver gender training and coaching to Implementing Partners (IPs) and FAO regional personnel in close coordination with all Regional Gender Officers.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in sociology, social sciences, nutrition, agriculture, human rights, economics, development economics, development studies, gender studies, or a closely related field from an advanced university (Master’s or equivalent).
  • At least five (5) years of professional experience in a field related to value chain development, agriculture, or rural development is required for those with advanced degrees from universities (Master’s or equivalent), as well as knowledge of gender mainstreaming, gender sensitive value chains, gender and development, human rights, social issues, political affairs, or humanitarian affairs.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in a field related to value chain development, agriculture, rural development, with special knowledge of gender mainstreaming, gender sensitive value chains, as well as gender and development, human rights, social affairs, political affairs, or humanitarian affairs, are required for university degrees (Bachelor).
  • Working understanding (level C) of Dari and/or Pashto, as well as English.
  • Afghanistan-born person.
  • Possessing the ability to manage projects with many stakeholders using a results-based approach.
  • Capacity to handle finances, deal with political, technical, and people management issues, and collaborate well with all project participants and personnel.
  • Proven ability to plan, organize, and carry out development initiatives and programs.
  • Working knowledge of setting up workshops or meetings with stakeholders.
  • The ability to see difficulties quickly and logically, as well as tact, initiative, and good judgment.
  • Ample and pertinent expertise in organizing and communicating with the necessary parties.
  • Outstanding report-writing abilities.
  • Excellent coordination and interpersonal communication skills, as well as a track record of productive collaboration with a range of stakeholders to achieve shared objectives.
  • Having prior UN experience is regarded as a major plus.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
