Opportunity Description

The UN-Habitat Photo Competition 2022 is now accepting entries. The UN-Flagship Habitat’s Program 1 is holding a picture contest on the theme “Inclusive, Vibrant Neighborhoods, and Communities.” Professional and amateur photographers from all over the world are invited to enter. Participants are encouraged to contribute photographs demonstrating how urban regeneration can improve quality of life, spatial equity, and diversity in neighborhoods, communities, and the city. Selected photographs will be shown during the World Urban Forum’s Eleventh Session (WUF11) in Katowice, Poland, from June 26 to 30.

Categories:

The photo competition features two categories for photo submissions, in keeping with the WUF11 slogan “Transforming our Cities for a Better Urban Future” and the Program’s ideals.

Participants should submit two images, one for each of the following categories:

  • Category 1: Improved urban area through urban regeneration 
  • Category 2: Urban area in decline and in need of urban regeneration

Benefits:

  • The contest winners will get a digital award certificate from the organizer partners.
  • During WUF11, all of the selected images will be displayed in a public exhibition and on UN-social Habitat’s media and digital channels.
  • Selected photographs may be used in future publications, with the authors receiving full credit in the text.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Artists from all over the world are encouraged to submit their work.
  • Participants are allowed to submit a maximum of four images; any more photos will not be evaluated, and only the first two couples will compete.
  • Participants are urged not to include the faces of underage in their photographs.
  • In the photo’s title, participants must include the Category (1, 2) and the name of the location and city.

How to apply for UN-Habitat Photo Competition?

Submit the completed application form and high-resolution photo(s) to the email address below. Include the Category (1, 2) and the name of the area and city in the caption of the photo & the email subject must be “Inclusive, Vibrant Neighborhoods and Communities.”

Judging Criteria:

  • Composition, responsiveness to the theme, creativity, and overall effect should all be considered when judging the photo that will be displayed.

Improved Urban Area through Urban Regeneration (Category 1)

The photo(s) must be of good quality and must depict a location that has benefited from urban regeneration and symbolizes its interconnected benefits (social, environmental, physical, and economic) through:

  • Social variety (gender, age, ethnicity, etc.)
  • Ecological presence and value
  • The state of the urban infrastructure
  • Economic activity

Urban areas in decline & in need of Urban Regeneration (Category 2)

The photo(s) must depict an unused or underutilized place that could aid in the process of urban redevelopment. The site may be the same as one of the photos submitted in Category 1 before the urban regeneration operations.
