Opportunity Description

Are you a scholar interested in Taiwan Studies or Southeast Asian Studies? The National Taiwan Library (NTL) invites international scholars to apply for its Fellowship for International Visiting Scholars, which aims to foster academic exchange and collaboration. This fellowship supports researchers from foreign universities and institutions in conducting studies at NTL, with a focus on Taiwan Studies or Southeast Asian Studies in the humanities and social sciences.

Eligible applicants include faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, Ph.D. students, and library professionals from foreign institutions. Scholars recommended by institutions with which NTL has an academic cooperation agreement may also apply. However, individuals currently engaged in research, teaching, or studies in Taiwan are not eligible.

Applications are accepted online through the NTL and Taiwan Studies Research Center websites from January to February each year, with results announced by the end of April. The fellowship provides airfare subsidies, covering one economy-class round-trip ticket, with a maximum reimbursement of NTD 35,000 for Northeast and Southeast Asia and NTD 60,000 for other regions.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Faculty members at foreign universities (professors, associate professors, assistant professors, senior lecturers, lecturers)
  • Postdoctoral researchers, Ph.D. holders, doctoral candidates, or Ph.D. students
  • Library personnel and researchers of equivalent rank at related academic institutions
  • Individuals recommended by institutions with an academic cooperation MOU with the Library, with research topics aligned to Taiwan Studies or Southeast Asian Studies
  • Applicants currently engaged in research, teaching, or studies in Taiwan are not eligible.

Required Documents

Applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Completed online application form
  • Curriculum Vitae (including a list of publications)
  • Research proposal (maximum three pages, in English or Chinese)
  • One recommendation letter (sent directly to [email protected])
  • Letter of approval from the highest administrative authority at the applicant’s institution

Awarded scholars must sign a declaration form and submit the following documents to complete their registration:

  • A copy of the visa
  • A copy of the passport
  • Proof of overseas medical insurance
  • An e-ticket or proof of ticket purchase
  • The boarding pass for the flight to Taiwan

Additionally, within two weeks of arrival in Taiwan, scholars must submit:

  • A copy of the unified identification number form
  • A copy of the bank account passbook cover

Selection Process and Criteria

The selection process is as follows:

  • Step 1: Qualification review based on submitted documents
  • Step 2: Evaluation by a panel of scholars and experts
  • Selection Criteria:
    • Quality and feasibility of the proposed research
    • Academic credentials and research achievements
    • Alignment with the fellowship’s goals and Taiwan’s research interests
