National Association of Science Writers (NASW) Science in Society Journalism Awards for 2023 is now accepting applications. The National Association of Science Writers (NASW) created the Science in Society awards to recognize investigative or interpretative reporting about the sciences & their influence on contemporary society without financial support from any professional or commercial interest.

Winners have shown creative reporting that goes beyond the research and ethical issues. Societal ramifications for communities & society at large since the inaugural award was given out in 1972 Because such writing helps them to write stories that are more broadly relevant and better serve their readers and communities, they particularly want to acknowledge science writing that is shaped by a range of views. As a result, they see diversity in subjects, sources, readers, and authors as a crucial element of greatness. Each year, the submissions are judged by a group of distinguished peers.

Platform-independent categories exist:

  • Series: A set of articles or broadcasts published or produced in a logical, titled series in a single publication make up an entry (or publications working together on the series). Written submissions must be at least 6,000 words long, and televised works must be at least 15 minutes long. Any market may enter a string.
  • Science Features: A single article between 1500 and 4000 words or a broadcast between 4 and 12 minutes long make up an entry. Every minute of audio or video is comparable to 350 words if an entry consists of a mix of media (text and audio, for example). A mixed-media entry may not exceed the max. word count for the category. Entrants must specify whether judges should consider different media or just text.
  • Commentary: A single essay, article, or other pieces of writing produced from a subjective point of view or perspective is an entry.
  • Longform Narratives: A single broadcast lasting 12 minutes or more, or a single article with a minimum word count of 4,000, constitutes an entry. Entrants must specify whether judges should consider different media or just text.
  • Science Reporting: A single article with fewer than 1500 words or a single broadcast with a maximum runtime of four minutes each constitutes an entry. Every minute of audio or video is comparable to 350 words if an entry consists of a mix of media (text and audio, for example). A mixed-media entry shouldn’t exceed the max. word count for the category. Entrants must specify whether judges should consider different media or just text.
  • Books: A book-length work qualifies as an entry if it has been published and made commercially available in print or as an ebook.

Prizes

  • The writing chosen to be the best in each category will receive a separate cash prize of $2,000 from NASW. The awards will only honor the writers and producers named on the initial entry.
  • One representative will receive travel expenses to accept the prize at the annual Science Writers conference after the awards are announced in October. The winners will decide how to divide the prize money. However, the award money is meant for content creators or producers rather than media or news organizations.

Eligibility

  • The work must first be published or aired in North America between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022, be spoken or written in English, and be aimed at lay adults. Publications with an audience outside of North America may apply if they do so.
