The MIT Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Engineering Excellence, which was established in 2021, seeks to discover and develop the next generation of leaders to help guide the school toward a more diverse and inclusive culture.

This program is intended to help postdoctoral fellows develop in a variety of ways. It will focus on providing resources and opportunities, as well as building a professional network for the fellows, in addition to research.

Benefits:

  • The program anticipates selecting 12-15 Distinguished Doctoral Fellows from the School of Engineering per cohort.
  • These fellows are funded for two years, with a $75,000 stipend and a $10,000 discretionary expense allowance per year.
  • This allowance can be used to pay for health insurance and relocation expenses, among other things.

  • Applicants who, as evidenced by their life experiences and educational background, have the potential to contribute to higher education by understanding the barriers that women, minorities, students with disabilities, and other members of underrepresented groups face in higher education careers. As an example,
    • Attendance at a minority-serving institution or another diverse academic institution;
    • Ability to articulate the barriers that women and minorities face in science and engineering fields;
    • Participation in higher education pipeline programs that are known to prepare students for the relevant MIT program.

Or:

  • Applicants who have demonstrated significant academic achievement by overcoming economic, social, or educational disadvantage, including factors such as generational wealth, Pell Grant eligibility, free/reduced lunch qualification, first-generation to college, or parent(s) level of education;
  • By the start of the program, all applicants must have completed their PhD.
