Opportunity Description

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Research Fellowship applications are open to international applicants. It is a unique opportunity offered by the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). The fellowship aims to fill a critical role within the ICARDA MEL team, dedicated to enhancing organizational effectiveness through results-based management (RBM). The selected MEL Research Fellow will work under the guidance of the MEL Specialist online, contributing to the design and improvement of MEL systems and tools.

Eligibility Criteria

Essential Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Water/Irrigation Engineering, Rangeland Ecology and Conservation, Plant Breeding, Livestock Management, Soil Science, or related disciplines.
  • Postgraduate or short course on Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Up to 2 years of work experience in monitoring and evaluation with an organization similar to ICARDA’s
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Office, and familiarity with web-based platforms
  • Knowledge of or experience working on international development issues related to ICARDA’s mandate
  • Proven potential to consistently meet deadlines and effectively manage time
  • Professional-level attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in work.
  • Strong ability to multitask and work seamlessly in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams

Desirable Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Master’s degree in Monitoring and Evaluation, Agricultural Economics, Water/Irrigation Engineering, Rangeland Ecology and Conservation, Plant Breeding, Livestock Management, Soil Science, or related disciplines.
  • 3-5 years of work experience in monitoring and evaluation with an organization similar to ICARDA’s.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in another international language other than English.
  • Knowledge of the CGIAR, its research portfolio, and its Centers.

Fellows Main Responsibilities

Selected fellows are responsible for the following tasks:

  • Help create and check plans for projects and the organization.
  • Take part in making ways to track progress and outcomes using tools like logical frameworks and indicators.
  • Join in creating methods to monitor results, including making computer models in Excel.
  • Assist in trying out new features to improve the web-based MEL platform.
  • Set up projects in the web-based MEL Platform.
  • Aid in making tools to collect data and program them for mobile data collection platforms like ODK, ONA, CSPro, KOBOToolbox, and more.
  • Train others on how to use the tools for collecting data and managing the collected information.
  • Assist ICARDA research programs in planning budgets and reviewing work plans.
  • Help find, document, and share lessons learned from different activities.
  • Support evaluation processes started by ICARDA or partner projects and research programs.
  • Take on other tasks as needed to run the monitoring, evaluation, and learning function assigned by the MEL Specialist efficiently.
