Opportunity Description

Asian Pacific American Religions Research Initiative (APARRI) Research Grant supports research projects of international doctoral students. This research grant is to advance scholarly and public knowledge of Asian-Pacific American religions.

APARRI invites applications from scholars pursuing research on Asian-Pacific American religions across all disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, theology, and interdisciplinary work.

For the 2022-2023 grant cycle, APARRI strongly supports projects offering inter-religious or comparative, racial, or ethnic works with a focus on under-represented groups in Pacific Islanders, South Asian Americans, Sikhs, Hindus, etc. The organization also accepts proposals from junior scholars.

Applicants should submit a scholarly work as a monograph, article, dissertation, critical edition, digital research project, or other academic resources. APARRI Research Grant does not fund fiction such as novels or films, textbooks, translation, or pedagogical projects. Recipients should spend funds to complete an entire project, to start a more extensive project by providing seed money, or to accomplish smaller works of a larger project by 30 June 2024.

Winning candidates will benefit from the APARRI Research Grants as follows: 

  • Maximum $30,000 for each award, but the final amount awarded may vary due to the competitive selection process. Therefore, most awards may be between $5,000 to $15,000.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants who meet the following eligibility criteria can apply for the APARRI Research Grants:

  • They should be doctorate candidates or those who are doctoral students.
  • Should propose projects with an Asian-Pacific American religious focus 
  • Meet additional criteria of this research grant. 

Required Documents 

Applicants should submit the following documents for APARRI Research Grant:

  • Fully-filled application form
  • A proposal with a maximum of 10 pages, double-spaced, in 11-point Times New Roman font, including all footnotes or endnotes. The proposal should include the following subheadings:
  1. Title
  2. Abstract with a maximum of 350 words
  3. Goals
  4. Significance of the project
  5. Description of project
  6. Methodology
  7. Product/Deliverable
  8. Timeline
  9. Bibliography; without annotation and no more than two pages
  10. Budget, if relevant, includes other potential sources of funding with a limited two pages budget justification
  • CV (Maximum 5 pages)
  • A neat academic writing sample of not more than 25 pages total. The sample can be from previously published work.
  • Support letter from the chair or dean for faculty requesting research leave or course release. 

Evaluation Criteria 

The selection committee will consider the following criteria for proposals:

  1. Proposal potential to advance and make an original scholarly contribution and public knowledge of Asian Pacific American religions, especially of under-represented groups in the research field. Proposal quality concerning its scope, methodology, theoretical framework, and grounding of scholarly literature.
  2. Project feasibility and likelihood that the applicant will implement the work within the proposed time and budget frame.
  3. Applicant’s academic record and career course.
