BBC World Service Educational Program for Afghan Youth who Lack Access to Education!

In Afghanistan, the BBC World Service has begun the first series of instructional programs for young audiences. Beginning on Saturday, April 1st, the new satellite station “BBC News Afghanistan” will broadcast an educational series called “The Dars Program” in Pashto and Dari/Persian languages on TV and radio for youngsters, including girls above the age of 11, who have been denied formal education. These programs will be broadcast on BBC News Pashto and Dari radio, BBC Persian TV, and online.

Fiona Crook, BBC World Service’s Program Editor and Head of News, stated: “As a worldwide public service, BBC World Service feels obligated to utilize the BBC’s world-class educational programming, as well as its journalism, to empower underprivileged youngsters, particularly girls, to take action. We wish to deliver an educational themed program to Afghan households in the hopes that the (Dars Program) would inspire and educate our young audience.”

The presenters of the lesson programs are Shazia Haya and Malka Ahmadzai (in Pashto language) and Alia Farzan and Sahar Rahimi (in Dari/Persian language), who left Afghanistan after the Taliban took over.

According to Shazia Haya: “When I work on this program, I see myself as a 16-year-old adolescent, and I wish there had been a TV show like (Dars Program) at the time… I hope that individuals who study with our assistance learn not to cease training.”

What is the Educational Theme of the BBC?

The (Dars) series is designed for students aged 11 to 16. The BBC’s educational content in maths, history, science and information and communication technology is mostly derived from the educational section of BBC Blitz, which provides additional BBC online study resources for students in School age is in the UK. BBC English lessons are divided into two sections for learning at lower and higher levels. (Dars Program) will also bring current and inspiring stories from the BBC World Service’s multilingual global content and the BBC’s 100 Women series to its young viewers in Afghanistan.

The first 12-week series of “The Dars Program” will be broadcast four times a day, Saturday to Friday, on the newly launched “BBC News Afghanistan” channel. This half-hour program will also be available through the Facebook channels of BBC Pashto and BBC News Dari, through the radio through the transmitters of BBC FM and short and medium waves in Afghanistan, and on BBC Persian TV.
