Journalists worldwide are invited to apply for the World Press Institute (WPI) Fellowships 2025. Hundreds of professional journalists worldwide apply each year for one of the ten WPI fellowship seats. The finalists represent some of the top journalists in their countries. They are naturally curious, bright, and ambitious and approach journalism with a strong sense of commitment and duty.

Fellowship Overview:

By participating in this program, fellows will experience firsthand the role, responsibility, and impact of a free press in one of the world’s largest and most diverse democracies. Through this immersive program, they will explore how the U.S. founding principles of press freedom and journalistic best practices promote transparency and accountability across government institutions, businesses, and organizations.

The program includes a guided tour of key cities, such as Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York City, and San Francisco. Fellows meet with experts from media outlets, think tanks, and advocacy organizations, gaining insights into innovative business models adopted by national and local media.

Participants also explore U.S. history, current affairs, and the challenges faced by American media while reporting on social, economic, and political issues. The program offers opportunities to interact with diverse individuals and some free time to explore independently.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicant must have worked full-time in print, broadcast, or online journalism for at least five years, including:

  • News or editorial divisions of newspapers, wire services, radio, television, websites, or online publications.
  • Photojournalists, editorial cartoonists, columnists, and broadcast producers are eligible to apply.
  • Supervisors of journalists are qualified if they have worked as journalists for at least five years.
  • Work done as a university student in journalism does not count toward experience.
  • Those who work in public relations or for organizations whose primary business isn’t the media are ineligible.
  • Must be working as a non-U.S. journalist outside of the United States at the time of application.
  • Leadership potential
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English.

Fellowship Terms:

WPI Fellowship Terms The following terms must be followed by fellows. If you violate these terms, you may get fired from the program.

  • Attend all scheduled briefings and WPI events and prepare for them.
  • Stay for the duration of the program & then return to your own country when it concludes.
  • As needed, write for the WPI website and other channels.
  • Fellows are also encouraged to share their experiences with their home readers, listeners, or viewers.
  • Participate in quarterly assessments and evaluations and multiple roundtable sessions to provide perspectives on U.S. or international journalistic concerns.
  • Acceptance of people from various cultures.
  • Willingness to travel – the program’s sites vary regularly, and fellows frequently live out of their suitcases.

Work Samples:

    • Submit three (3) online, publicly accessible work samples.
    • Use platforms like YouTube and Dropbox, or upload directly with the application.

Photo:

    • Provide a high-resolution, color headshot (300 DPI, 2.5 inches/6.5 cm tall).
    • Accepted formats: JPG/JPEG or GIF.

References:

    • Include names and valid email addresses for three references.
    • WPI will email them instructions for submitting recommendation letters.
