Opportunity Description

UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program 2025 is now accepting applications. This eight-week program targets students considering careers in biology or related sciences. It provides hands-on biomedical research experience with faculty from the University of Tokyo’s Graduate Schools of Medicine, Engineering, Science, Agricultural and Life Sciences, and the Institute of Industrial Science. By summer’s end, students gain research skills and build international connections, fostering future collaborations.

The Amgen Scholars Program offers undergraduates a chance to engage in scientific research at leading institutions worldwide. Since its launch in the U.S. (2006), Europe (2008), and Japan (2015), the program has expanded to institutions across North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

Notes:

  1. All students are responsible for obtaining their health and travel insurance. Please remember that neither the Amgen Foundation nor the University of Tokyo can provide medical or travel insurance.
  2.  The stipend should be used to budget food and personal trips while in Japan.
Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants for the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program must be undergraduate students who are:

    • Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at a college/university in Asia*
    • Completed at least the first year of study before the program starts
    • Will not graduate before the program begins and will continue undergraduate studies for at least 1 semester/quarter after the program ends

Additional Requirements:

    • Strong academic performance
    • Proficient in English, demonstrated by minimum scores on recognized tests (TOEFL iBT 72, IELTS 5.5, etc.), if not a native English speaker
    • Interest in pursuing a Ph.D.

Expectations:

Also, applicants must fulfill these requirements:

  • Fully commit to the Amgen Scholars Program (no courses or jobs allowed during the program).
  • Attend the entire program duration and stay in UTokyo-provided accommodation.
  • Engage actively in daily lab life, respect team members’ work, and attend lab meetings.
    • (For Japan-based students, accommodations may be made for university-related commitments.)
  • Participate in the program’s orientation, required conferences, activities, and social events.
  • Present a poster or give a presentation on the summer research project.
  • Submit a research paper to the program director at the program’s end.

  • Portrait photo (JPEG): Full-face photo, front view, eyes open. Follow passport photo standards (45 x 35mm). Avoid “selfies”; will be used as profile photo if accepted.
  • Personal Identification (PDF): Scan ID page of passport, travel document, or a valid student/national ID.
  • Academic Transcript (PDF): Official transcript in English, scan all pages, including back pages and notations.
  • Proof of English Proficiency (PDF): Required if not a native English speaker or if English is not the primary language:
    • Option 1: Non-English instruction for degree – submit valid proficiency test score.
    • Option 2: English instruction for degree – submit valid test score or document verifying English as medium of instruction.
    • Note: TOEFL ITP scores not accepted; scores must be within test validity period.
  • Latest CV (PDF): Highlight relevant work experience and projects (max. 500 words).
  • Letters of Recommendation (PDF): Two letters submitted via TAO by referees.
