Eligibility requirements

To be eligible, prospective applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • For MSc programs, hold an appropriate bachelor’s degree, specialist degree or any other corresponding degree from a recognized university.
  • For Ph.D. programs, hold a relevant master’s degree, specialist degree, or any other corresponding degree from a reputable university.
  • As the institute receives lots of applications from outstanding students and its selection process is highly competitive, fulfilling the minimum criteria does not necessarily mean admission.

Students having obtained education or training in the following fields have generally succeeded in applying to Skoltech.

  • Computer science, computer engineering, computational mathematics, mathematics & applied mathematics, informatics, etc.
  • Physics, applied physics
  • Chemistry, chemical engineering
  • Biology, molecular biology, bio-engineering, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, systems biology
  • Materials science and engineering

Language requirement:

  • Since the language of instruction at the institute is English, applicants must meet the language proficiency requirement by presenting a TOEFL or IELTS Score.
  • Acceptable TOEFL score: TOEFL IBT 80, 450 TOEFL ITP or 6 on IELTS. Applicants’ scores should be valid for two years and those with a degree from an English-speaking institution are exempted from this criteria.
  • Submitting GRE is not mandatory, however, it will strengthen your application and chance of success.

Note: Applicants who do not have a proof of English proficiency may take the TOEFL ITP during  a Selection Weekend at Skoltech.

Application documents

It must include the following:

  • Online application form (linked above in apply now)
  • Motivation letter
  • Resume/CV
  • Two letters of recommendation (only for master students)
  • Evidence of proficiency score in English, i.e., TOEFL or IELTS (students may first apply without test scores, but all should provide it at a later date “selection weekend”)
  • Copy of transcripts, in English (and original language) of all higher education institutions completed. In the application phase, copies will be enough, but official copies must be presented at a later stage.
  • Results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)- Optional
  • As part of the admission process, candidates should name the Skoltech faculty member(s) with whom they would like to conduct doctoral studies. Applicants may review the Skoltech faculty profiles prior to beginning the online application on the web-page of each PhD Program and connect with the faculty member (via e-mail) that only applies to PhD candidates).
