The Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism is now accepting applications. A bright journalist is given the Michelle Lang Fellowship early in their career, giving them the chance to develop their professional abilities and gain experience by spending a full year working in two of Canada’s busiest newsrooms.

“The Michelle Lang Fellowship was established to recognize a brave and outstanding young journalist who paid the ultimate price while carrying out important job. The fellow will spend half of their year working for Postmedia in Calgary’s newsroom, which includes the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun, and half for the National Post. The fellowship includes a specific project that enables the winner to concentrate on a subject of great priority to Canadians. The Fellow will become a subject expert on an issue deserving of greater notice through their work on the project, which will add to a national discourse.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Strong communication and writing abilities.

  • A capacity for collaboration with others.
  • Simple reporting abilities.
  • French or other language bilingualism is seen favorably.
  • Experience working for a daily newspaper in the past is a plus but not a requirement.
  • Candidates that are chosen must have a current driver’s license.

  • A description of the unique subject you want to study as part of the Fellowship. Please describe the specific issue or topic you want to explore, the research process you’ll use for your project, how your work will offer perspective to the topic that other journalists have not yet provided, and how you’ll convey your information in a changing media landscape.
  • A résumé.
  • Three examples of your best published work; samples should demonstrate your variety of expertise and capacity for handling challenging issues.
  • Please submit your application with three signed references; do not send them separately as we cannot ensure that they will be matched with your file.
