Opportunity Description

The James Buchanan Fellowship is a competitive, one-year fellowship offered by the Mercatus Center to academics in any field who have just finished their Ph.D. degrees.

This fellowship seeks to foster critical discussion of Adam Smith’s political economy and that of the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy among early-career academics. Additionally, James Buchanan Fellows will learn about current applications of these concepts to social science issues about the institutional foundations and dynamics of economic, political, and social coordination.

Information About Program

James Buchanan Fellows participate in three virtual colloquia and spend two weekends living on campus at George Mason University (Fairfax, VA) discussing mainstream political economics. The activities that make up the James Buchanan Fellowship all take place in the same calendar year to meet the duties and responsibilities of early career academics in teaching or research. The three shorter colloquia virtually take place throughout the summer as well.

A collection of readings serves as the basis for each in-person colloquium, featuring lectures, discussion forums, sit-down dinners, and hospitality. Every online colloquium has discussion sessions organized around a set of readings. The colloquia feature discussions led by experts from the Hayek Program, related scholars, and James Buchanan Fellowship alums. Fellows will be able to apply for conference and research funding and join a network of Mercatus students, alums, and researchers engaged in and performing cutting-edge research in modern political economy.
