Opportunity Description
The American Councils for International Education (ACIE) is pleased to introduce the Leadership Advancement Program (LEAP) for fifty Afghan youths aged 13 to 18 who have recently arrived in the United States (since August 2021). The LEAP program, funded by the US Department of State, provides a unique chance for Afghan children to improve their English language and critical thinking abilities, create leadership, and prepare for life in the United States.
From July 25th through August 12th, 2022, the three-week program will take place in a chosen location in the Washington, DC, Virginia, and Maryland metropolitan region. The program will fully be supervised by American Council personnel.

Who Can Apply?
To participate in the LEAP program, you must fulfill the following requirements:
- Applicants must be between the ages of 13 and 18.
- Candidates have to be arrived in the U.S. after August 2021.
- Afghan youth in the United States must have a high beginner or low intermediate level of English.
- They need to exhibit their identity (passport or Tazkera).
- Applicant must have parental permission to enroll in this three-week program.
Selection Criteria
Staff from the American Councils in Washington, DC will review your application. Shortlisted applicants will be informed by email and invited to a virtual interview beginning June 20th. After the interview, 50 participants and 10 alternates will be selected for the LEAP program in July.
