Opportunity Description

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation was established by Harry Guggenheim to support research on violence, aggression, and dominance.

Furthermore, the goal of the HFG Distinguished Awards is to honor eminent academics who plan to significantly advance their understanding of a violent topic. Projects in the social and scientific sciences, as well as other fields that aim to advance knowledge of the causes, expressions, and management of violence and aggression, are open to submission from applicants worldwide.
Research on important contemporary questions of violence, such as its causes, mechanisms, and mitigation strategies, is prioritized.

The Distinguished Scholar Awards (Benefits)

  • Most of the grants vary from $15,000 to $45,000 each year for one or two years.
  • Applications for larger amounts and longer durations will be considered but must be strongly justified.
  • The awards are made to individuals (or sometimes two or, rarely, three principal investigators) for specific projects, not general research support.
  • They are not given to institutions to support institutional programs. Individuals who obtain research funding may be taxed on the funds received.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Citizens of any country may apply for an award.
  • While practically all award recipients have a Ph.D., M.D., J.D., or similar degree, there are no official degree requirements for the honor.
  • The award, however, may not be used to support research undertaken as part of the requirements for a graduate degree.
  • Applicants need not be affiliated with an institution of higher learning, although most are college or university professors.

Application Requirements

  • The project title must be provided by the applicant. If the project contains more than one principal investigator, fill out section C with information about the co-applicant.
  • Enter a project proposal abstract.
  • A project budget with its justifications;
  • Upload a single document comprising the primary investigators’ CVs and a list of publications, as well as the CVs of all professional workers (max two pages).
  • Upload a research plan that includes the particular aims, background, significance of the study, and methods, as well as an indication of your acquaintance with important academic literature and a description of who your project will supplement or improve upon.
  • Enter details if additional funding is needed for the proposed research.
