The National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) offers different types of GRIPS Master Scholarships. Outstanding international students can apply for these fully-funded scholarships to pursue their studies in Japan.

The Young Leaders Program (YLP)-MEXT Government Scholarship

Japanese Government or YLP-MEXT Scholarship is available for the Master of Young Leaders Program (YLP) at the School of Government at GRISP. International students from specific countries can apply for this scholarship through Japanese embassies. For deadlines, please contact the Japanese Embassy in your home country.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The YLP-MEXT Government Scholarship applicants should be under 40 as of October 1, 2024.
  • Be highly talented government officials with at least three years of full-time work experience in public administration.
  • Be from any of the eligible countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China, Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Republic of Korea, Kyrgyz Republic, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Viet Nam.

Benefits of the Scholarship:

The YLP-MEXT Government Scholarship for 2024/25 provides the following benefits:

  • Monthly stipend of JPY 242,000
  • Covering students’s application fee, admission fee, and tuition
  • Economy-class flight ticket from the home country of the student to/from Japan upon enrollment at GRIPS and
  • Necessary field trip expenses

Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA)

Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) is for the Master of Macroeconomic Policy Program (MEP) at GRISP. International students should apply through the International Monetary Fund ( IMF) by November 1, 2023.

Eligibility Criteria:

Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) requirements are as follows:

  • Applicants for the JISPA preferably be under 40 years as of October 1, 2024.
  • Be government officials and professionals who are designing and executing macroeconomic policies
  • Be from one of the eligible countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Pacific Island countries, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Viet Nam

Benefits of the JISPA:

  • Monthly stipend of JPY 157,000
  • Full application, admission, and tuition fee
  • Economy-class flight ticket from the home country of the student to Japan upon enrollment at GRIPS and vice versa
  • Pre-arrival allowance of JPY20,000
  • Required field trip costs
  • Book allowance of about JPY100,000 for a one-year master program, up to JPY75,000/year for a year program
  • Computer/software costs of about JPY100,000
  • Establishment or settling allowance of JPY70,000
  • Other essential costs

Indonesian Government Scholarship for Linkage Master’s Program

This scholarship is for the EPP master’s degree program for talented government officials in Indonesia. Applicants pursuing a master’s degree at one of the designated universities can apply for this scholarship. For more details, please get in touch with the sponsorship organization in Indonesia.

JICA/Building Research Institute (BRI)

This scholarship is for the Disaster Management Policy Program (DMP) in seismology, earthquake engineering, and tsunami. The application deadline for this scholarship varies based on JICA or the Japanese Embassy.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants should be between 25 and 42 years old as of October 1, 2024
  • Be from an eligible country (for country details, contact the JICA Office or Embassy of Japan).

This scholarship is for the Disaster Management Policy Program (DMP) in water-related. The application deadline for this scholarship varies based on JICA or the Japanese Embassy.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants should be between 25 and 42 years old as of October 1, 2024
  • Be from an eligible country (for country details, contact the JICA Office or Embassy of Japan).

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Scholarship

JICA Scholarship is available for the Master of Maritime Safety and Security Policy Program (MSP). The application deadline for this scholarship varies based on JICA.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants should be under 45 years as of October 1, 2024
  • Have work experience in maritime safety and security-related areas/organizations
  • Be from an eligible country (contact JICA Office for countries list)

  • The scholarship covers round-trip flight ticket
  • Travel Insurance
  • Allowances for meals, living expenses, accommodation, outfit, and shipping
  • Study tours costs
  • Costs of program implementation, including materials

How to Apply for GRIPS Scholarships Through Sponsoring Organizations?

To apply for a GRIPS Scholarship through a sponsoring organization, the applicant should contact the specific organization. Please note that there is no scholarship application; you can directly apply for admission to your desired program to be considered for a scholarship program.   • Applicants can get details from the sponsoring organization and submit their application package during the application period.
  • Candidates applying for any MP1/2, MEP, PA, G-cube, or STI with a JICA scholarship should apply to their local JICA office AND directly to GRIPS before the deadlines. As a candidate, your organization should nominate you to JICA. So, contact the department in charge of your organization of overseas study rather than the JICA office in your area.
