Opportunity Description
The Coastal Hazards, Risks, Climate Change and Adaptation (COASTHazar) consortium offers 20 competitive Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Scholarships (EMJMD) for 2024-26. The scholarships will be available for two years for Program countries students and candidates from Partner Countries, including Afghanistan.
COASTHazar is a collaborative Master’s degree program by the IHE Delft (Institute for Water Education) and its partner universities, which the European Union (EU) funds.
More About the CoastHazar Program:
The COASTHazar Erasmus Mundus Master’s is a four-semester international, comprehensive, and inter-disciplinary curriculum (120 ECs – credit units). It is founded on the united vision and complementary competence of three universities:
- Institute for Water Education (IHE Delft in the Netherlands)
- Algarve University (Portugal)
- Cantabria University (in Spain)
More than 30 affiliated partners from academia, government, and commercial industry give the curriculum a real-world perspective and a link to the labor market. Some partners come from nations that have heavily experienced the impact of coastal risks.

Benefits of the EMJMD Scholarships for CoastHazar
EMJMD Scholarships offer the following benefits for successful applicants of the Coastal Hazards, Risks, Climate Change and Adaptation (COASTHazar):
- Students’ participation costs, including tuition fees, library and laboratory charges, full insurance coverage, and any other obligatory costs associated with the student’s participation in the Master’s program
- A monthly grant of EUR 1,400 for subsistence, student travel, and installation fees for the whole two-year term of the EMJMD study program
- Students with disabilities may be eligible to contribute to individual needs up to a specified limit if they meet the basic eligibility requirements outlined in the grant agreement.
Notes:
- In addition to the EMJMD scholarships, a limited number of scholarships with reduced tuition fees are available. These include a lower tuition price of EUR 3,630 (incl. VAT) rather than EUR 18,000.
- Two scholarships are particularly available for these countries’ applicants: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, and Tunisia.

Requirements of the EMJMD Scholarships for CoastHazar
There are separate sets of requirements for admission to IMETE and Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Scholarships as follows:
Scholarship Requirements:
- Scholarships are only available to private or natural persons (to whom Erasmus provides a tuition fee invoice), not to employers, governments, or other scholarship sponsors.
- All other expenditures like insurance, visas, travel, and the cost of living and accommodation for the next 24 months are not part of the scholarship, and proof of funding for these fees is obligatory in the form of bank statements.
Admission Requirements:
- Proof of successful completion of a first higher education degree in a B.Sc. (equivalent to 180 credit points under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)) is necessary.
- Students should prove a high final grade or GPA of minimum B/B+ (US System) or at least 2nd upper (UK System)
- A bachelor’s degree in one of the following subjects:
- Oceanography, Meteorology, Climate Sciences or equivalent,
- Civil, Coastal, or Environmental engineering, or equivalent, or
- Other degrees with courses in areas or related subjects, such as Physics, Statistics, Fluid Dynamics or Mechanics, Hydraulics, and Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences).
- Adequate academic knowledge of mathematics and physics is essential.
- Be from one of the countries mentioned in the EU List of Classified Countries and Regions
- Proof of an internationally recognized English language tests:
IELTS (academic):
- Overall: ≥6.0 (regular/joint MSc), ≥6.5 (research MSc)
- Writing: ≥6.0 (normal/joint MSc), ≥6.5 (research MSc)
TOEIC:
- Total overall: ≥960 (regular/joint MSc), ≥1220 (research MSc)
- Writing: ≥150(regular/joint MSc), ≥175 (research MSc)
TOEFL:
- iBT Internet-based: ≥80 overall and ≥17 for writing (regular/joint MSc), ≥90 overall and ≥20 for writing (research MSc)
- iBT Home Edition: ≥80 overall and ≥17 for writing (regular/joint MSc), ≥90 overall and ≥20 for writing (research MSc)
Cambridge:
- CPE/C2 Proficiency: Grades A, B, and C (regular/joint MSc), Grades A, B and C (research MSc)
- CAE/C1 Advanced: Grades A, B, and C (regular/joint MSc), Grades A and B or ≥176 (research MSc)
Note:
