Free Online Courses from University System of Maryland

The University System of Maryland (USM) is the state of Maryland’s public higher education system. Its members comprise all of the state’s public institutions, with the exception of Morgan State University and St. Mary’s College. The USM has one research institution and three regional higher education institutions in addition to its 12 degree-granting universities. Their 12 universities provide over 1,400 academic programs to over 176,000 students at various locations around the state and around the world.

The Kirwan Center has been assisting USM institutions in making deliberate ventures into online learning since its beginnings. In this sense, “online learning” refers to any learning environment that makes significant use of a web-based component that facilitates collaboration and access to information outside of the classroom. At USM, online learning techniques span from entirely online degree/certificate programs to MOOCs, hybrid, and “flipped” courses.

To assist institutions utilize the affordances of online learning to allow students the freedom to connect with material, professors, and learning communities in the manner that best fit their requirements, the Kirwan Center has established USMx.
