Organization Description
The University of Newcastle (UON), sometimes known as Newcastle University, is an Australian public university located in Newcastle, New South Wales. It was founded in 1965 and has its major campus in the Newcastle suburb of Callaghan. Ourimbah, Port Macquarie, Singapore, Newcastle CBD, and Sydney CBD are all locations where the university has campuses.
Historically, the University of Newcastle Medical School has used the problem-based learning approach for its undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine curriculum — a system that was later legislated for use throughout Australia by the Australian Medical Council. In the early 1990s, it was the first to employ the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT). Since then, the UMAT has been generally accepted as an additional selection criterion by several medical schools around Australia.
