Organization Description
MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute) is a Swiss-based publisher of open-access scientific journals. Founded in 1996 by Shu-Kun Lin as a chemical sample archive, it evolved into a major academic publisher and launched its current publishing model in 2010. By 2024, MDPI will publish over 430 journals, including many indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, and DOAJ.
MDPI is recognized for its rapid peer-review process, broad disciplinary coverage, and open-access model, which is funded by article processing charges (APCs). It became the world’s largest publisher of open-access articles in 2020.
While MDPI is a member of reputable organizations such as COPE, OASPA, and STM, its rapid growth and publishing model have drawn criticism regarding editorial quality and academic rigor. Some of its journals have been downgraded by academic indexing bodies, including those in China, Finland, and Norway.
