Organization Description
The Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES) is a public body under the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI) in Portugal. As an executive service of MECI, DGES plays a central role in managing and regulating higher education policies in the country.
DGES is responsible for overseeing access and admission to higher education, supporting the assessment and accreditation of institutions, and coordinating international cooperation and student mobility within Europe. It also monitors infrastructure needs, manages the Social Action Fund, and ensures the quality and availability of social services in higher education.
Its mission is to implement and regulate public policies in higher education, while its vision is to shape the future of higher education in Portugal. DGES operates on key values such as cooperation, ethics, openness, and consistency to ensure transparent, rigorous, and inclusive governance.
