Opportunity Description

The Yale Drama Series of Yale University is seeking submissions for its 2025 playwriting competition. The current judge, Jeremy O. Harris, will select the winning play, and the winner of this annual competition will receive the David Charles Horn Prize of $10,000. Moreover, Yale University Press will publish enterants’ manuscript and they will have the chance to participate in a celebratory event. The prize and publication depend on the playwright’s agreeing to the publishing agreement terms.

Requirements

To prepare their manuscript, all applicants should follow these guidelines:

  • Plays only written in the English language are acceptable.
  • applicants from around the world can submit their plays
  • Submissions should be original, unpublished full-length plays with at least 65 pages. Plays with less than 65 pages are not considerable.
  • Musicals, translations, and children’s plays are not accepted.
  • The Yale Drama Series supports emerging playwrights, who may win the competition only once.
  • Manuscripts authored by one playwright are eligible, and the playwright can only submit once.
  • Professionally produced or published plays are not eligible.
  • Plays that have had a reading, workshop, non-professional production, or published as an actor’s edition are eligible
  • Plays under option, commissioned, or scheduled for professional publication or production at the time of submission are not acceptable.
  • Applicants should type their plays and should provide word process and page numbers.
  • The Yale Drama Series has the right to reject any manuscript.

How to Apply?

Electronic Submissions:

The Yale Drama Series Competition strongly prefer electronic submission because applicants will receive immediate confirmation of their successful submission and the ability to check the status of their entry.

Please follow these guides:

  • Applicants who submit their play electronically should omit their name and contact information from their manuscript and submission file name.
  • The manuscript should start with a title page indicating the play’s title, a list of characters, a 2-3 sentence keynote play description, and a list of acts and scenes.
  • All applicants should enter the title of their play, their name, contact information, and a short biography in the electronic submission form.

Hardcopy Submissions:

The Yale Drama Series Competition also accepts hard copies of the submission. Please follow these steps:

  • If applicants submit a hard copy of their play, the manuscript should start with a title page showing the play’s title and the applicant’s name, address, telephone number, email address, and page count.
  • Also, provide a second title page that lists the play’s title only, a 2-3 sentence keynote description of the play, a list of acts and scenes, and a list of characters. Please include a brief biography on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.
  • Do not staple or bind the manuscript.
  • Please do not send the original work because it will not be returned after the competition.
  • Please include your email address on the title page, stamp, or self-address postcard to acknowledge receipt of your manuscript.
