Opportunity Description

The goal of the Global Youth Hackathon on Food Waste is to inspire enthusiastic people to create ground-breaking, neighborhood-based solutions to the problem of food waste. Through various stages of collaboration, mentoring, and proposal refinement, participants will create actionable initiatives that have the potential to drastically reduce food waste in their communities.

Preliminary proposals in English are open to teams and individuals interested in participating; these will be evaluated by a diverse panel of evaluators from WFF, KidsforSDGs, and technical experts. The hackathon will feature 15 proposals out of the top 15 that are chosen. A group of food waste specialists from both inside and outside the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will serve as mentors for each initiative. Before the hackathon, participants will have two live online sessions with mentors to help them polish their projects and pitches.

In breakout rooms during the online hackathon, competitors will present their projects to the judges. Upon completion of the hackathon, participants will edit and resubmit their ideas, along with a comprehensive budget. The same judges will next reevaluate these and choose the top five final projects based on the improvements. In order to help them get ready for their live pitch presentations at the 2024 WFF flagship event in Rome, these participants will receive additional coaching.
