Opportunity Description

The United Nations (UN) is calling for applications for English Interpreters in New York, Vienna, Nairobi, and Geneva. No work is necessary for these positions, but applicants’ experience as conference interpreters or in translation, editing, verbatim reporting, or relevant areas will be an asset. The Interpreters will work in the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) under the general supervision of the Chief of Interpretation, Language Section, or Service as appropriate.

First-level university degree holders from an accredited school of interpretation with at least one full academic year of devotion to performance are eligible to apply. Alternatively, applicants with 50 days’ work experience as conference interpreters and a first-level degree from an accredited institution with English as the medium of instruction can apply. Applicants must prove their work experience as conference interpreters, translators, editors, or verbatim reporters.

Interpreters’ Responsibilities

English Interpreters will be responsible for the following duties within delegated authority:

  • Covering a maximum of three hours and eight meetings per week of various United Nations bodies;
  • Provide interpretation of speeches from French or Russian into English;
  • May occasionally cover sensitive sessions;
  • May work as all interpreters’ team leaders assigned to a given session;
  • May accomplish other related duties as required.

Assessment and Application Process

Following are the details of the assessment and application process:

Application Submission:

  • Please submit a cover letter (150-250 words in English) with the application explaining your desire to work as a freelance interpreter at the United Nations.

Screening and Eligibility

  • Applications will be carefully assessed based on eligibility criteria.
  • Only qualified applicants will be invited for the examination.

Mandatory Mock Test

In the first week of March 2024, candidates must complete a mandatory mock test in English to check equipment and internet connection. Failure to complete the mock test will result in disqualification.

Part I – Online Examination (Mar 19 2024):

  • Simultaneous interpretation into English from French and Russian speeches.
  • The exam window opens for a limited time for recording interpretations.
  • Successful candidates proceed to Part II.

Part II – Competency-Based Interview (CBI):

  • Only candidates successful in Part I will receive an invitation
  • Interview details will be provided after Part I completion.

Placement on Reserve List:

  • Successful candidates placed on the reserve list for English interpreters.
  • Eligible for temporary appointments under WAE contractual arrangement in all DGACM duty stations.

Reasonable Accommodation:

Notification of Results:

  • Applicants are informed in writing of the Assessment Panel’s decision.
  • Decisions are final and not subject to appeal.
  • Individual scores or results will not be released.

  • Successful exams in French and Russian into English place candidates on the Global Language Register for various assignments.
  • Candidates from underrepresented regions: Successful French exam places them on the Global Language Register for French assignments.
  • Candidates from other regions: A successful French or Russian exam is final, but recruitment occurs after passing the second passive language exam.
