Opportunity Description

The World Academy of Science TWAS established an associateship scheme in 1994 in collaboration with UNESCO to help counteract the brain drain that is affecting many developing countries. The program encourages researchers to visit centers of excellence in the south on a regular basis, providing housing and food, travel expenses, research facilities, and a monthly payment of $300 for three years to the applicants to conduct their research.

Benefits of TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme?

  • The Associateship includes travel expenses as well as a monthly payment of USD 300 for incidental local expenses.
  • The host center covers the costs of lodging and meals, as well as providing research facilities.

Who is Eligible for TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme?

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must have a PhD or an equivalent degree to be considered. Associate assignments are made on the basis of merit and are very competitive.
  • Scientists from remote institutions in impoverished nations are given special consideration.
  • Women scientists are urged to apply in particular.

Required Documents

  • A scanned copy of the passport’s first page
  • Statement of support from the head of the home institution
  • Up to four pages of curriculum vitae
  • Full list of publications
  • The Ph.D. certificate
  • Two letters of recommendation (one of the recommendation letters should from an expert in another country).
  • Letter of invitation with the following criteria:
    • On the host institution’s letterhead paper It should include the proposed visit dates (two to three months for each visit)
    • Reference to the proposed cooperation.
    • It should be clear that the applicant and the proposed host have discussed the scientific work to be done during the visit and that the conditions for carrying out the work, including the timing of the visit and the facilities available, have been agreed upon.
