Opportunity Description

The Tower Poetry Competition offers the most lucrative reward for young poets in the UK. Students between the ages of 16 and 18 who attend UK-based schools may enter the tournament for free.

Two anonymous guest judges alternate each year—and a Christopher Tower student referee the tournament. Every year, the theme is chosen to let participants interpret it how they see fit.

The Christopher Tower Poetry Prizes are taking flight this year, with a first prize that has been raised and a whole set of prizes totaling more than £14,000.

  • The author of the finest individual poem on the subject of “The Planets” will get £5000.
  • A second prize of £3000 and a third prize worth £1500 will also be awarded. There will also be ten runners-up, each of whom will win £500.


  • On February 24, 2023, applicants must be at least 16 years old and under 19 years old.
  • Participants must be enrolled full- or part-time in an educational program at a British school, college, or other institution of higher learning. The tournament is not open to students doing courses in higher education.
  • The specified subject must be covered in submissions for the 2023 Tower Poetry Prize.
  • The length of entries, which cannot exceed 48 lines, must be in English.
  • Only one poem may be submitted per participant.
  • After being submitted to the Tower Poetry Competition, poems cannot be altered; only the first submission will be considered.
  • Jointly written poems are not eligible.
  • Each poem submitted must be the author’s original work; it may not contain poetry by others without proper attribution and citation, nor may it contain significant elements (such as phrases, lines, or longer compositional units) that have been suggested or written by others who were involved in the submission’s editorial review.
  • The poems must not have previously been published, spoken aloud, or entered another contest.
  • Since poems are judged anonymously, names and addresses must not be included with the poem’s content.
  • The poem must be submitted without any “track adjustments.”
  • No more discussion will be had on the judges’ judgment, which is final.
  • Each poem’s author retains all copyright. The winning poets agree to give Christ Church permission to print or broadcast their poetry for a year starting on April 19, 2023.
  • Close relatives or family members of Christ Church, Oxford staff are not eligible to enter the contest.
