Opportunity Description

Todai Fellowships provide financial assistance to international students enrolled in Ph.D. programs at The University of Tokyo. This fellowship must be applied for at the same time as the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS) application.

Before being awarded the fellowship, nominees chosen by GSFS will be subjected to a final screening by the Division of Global Campus Initiatives. Applicants will be notified of the GSFS screening result for the fellowship concurrently with the result of the admission examination. The complete and formal screening results will be communicated within one month of enrolment. Please remember that if the Division of Global Campus Initiatives nominates you, you have a good chance of receiving the fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Those seeking admission to a Ph.D. program at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences are eligible.
  • Those with valid visas remain in Japan as “College students.”
  • Those who have not applied for and/or plan to apply for fellowships or scholarships offered by private organizations.

  2. Former supervisor’s recommendation letter (preferably from your master’s program supervisor)
  3. Research Plan
  4. A list of past achievements
  5. Graduate and undergraduate school transcripts
  6. Copy of papers presented.

How to apply for Todai Fellowship at the University of Tokyo in Japan?

Submit the Required Documents simultaneously as your application at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences website (https://www.k.u-tokyo.ac.jp/exam/info/).

Upload the needed documents 1, 3, 4, 5 & 6 to the online application site by selecting “Upload File (Others)” from “My Page.” All files should be collected into a single PDF file named “TodaiFellow Applicant Name” (file size: up to 7MB).

Document (2) “Recommendation letter from your former supervisor,” please sign, convert to PDF format, and upload to the link below. Please request that the recommender notify the student affairs team once the upload is complete.

Application Guidelines
Selection Criteria:

  • The selecting committees’ decision.

Important Notes:

  • Documents submitted will not be returned for any reason.
  • Those who have made the decision not to attend the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences must refuse a candidacy.
  • Recipients must have the “College Student” eligibility status. Those with any other eligibility status are ineligible for the Todai Fellowship.
  • If GSFS discovers any incorrect information in submitted application forms, or if recipients will or are to receive any other fellowships or scholarships than Todai Fellowship, GSFS will terminate Todai Fellowship and compel any stipends paid till then to be returned.
  • The number of recipients and the stipend amount may be modified at any time without notice.
