Opportunity Description

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State accepts applications for TechWomen Leadership Program 2023. This Program aims to empower women by providing opportunities to enter the tech world with increased morale, confidence, and training in the United States. 

TechWomen Leadership Program is a fully funded leadership program with a mission to train future women generations and bring out the best female leaders. Women worldwide are achieving the bests in all fields of life. Also, women in the tech world have resonated with the rest of the world by realizing their full potential. As a result, the women’s leadership program brings together women leaders who have excelled in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Emerging women leaders with two years of experience in (STEM) from Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East can apply for this opportunity. Participants will have access to the knowledge, networks, and resources to reach their full potential.

The participants will start their four weeks program with workshops and project-based mentorship at host companies in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, or Chicago and conclude with several meetings and special events in Washington, D.C.

Benefits

Participants will benefit from the Program’s financial and housing as follows:

  • International round-trip airfare from the home country of the participant to the United States;
  • Chicago or San Francisco to Washington, D.C. domestic flights; 
  • During the mentorship, applicants will benefit from housing in San Francisco, Sunnyvale, California, Emeryville, California, Chicago, or Illinois. Participants will live in a shared apartment with a fellow Emerging Leader, use a shared living room and kitchen but with a private bedroom; 
  • Food and other miscellaneous expenses;
  • Hotel stay in Washington, D.C.; 
  • Public transportation to the participant’s host company; 
  • Local transportation to group program events in San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, D.C.; 

Note: The TechWomen program cannot accommodate participants’ spouses, children, or other dependents.

Participants are also responsible for any non-program activities’ allowances such as independent sightseeing, cultural events, and any non-program-related domestic or international travel.

Also, the Emerging Leaders will: 

  • Challenge themselves by asking new questions and thinking about new ideas.
  • Collaborate on an innovative project with other like-minded women in their fields.
  • Make connections with influential industry leaders.
  • Find their own unique, creative leadership style.
  • Make meaningful connections with women from all over the world.
  • Explore the diverse communities of San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
  • Inspire the next generation of girls and women in their respective countries.
  • Each participant will pair with a Professional Mentor who works closely with the participant to conduct a project at the host company.
  • Each participant will explore the Bay Area or Chicago with Cultural Mentors to deepen mutual understanding.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements to apply for Leadership Program 2023:

  • Be a woman who has worked 2-years full-time in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Other unpaid work experiences and internships do not count toward the required professional experience.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree, four-year university degree, or equivalent.
  • Be able to write and speak English.
  • At the time of application and during the Program, applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of one of the countries mentioned above.
  • Be eligible for a J-1 exchange visitor visa in the United States.
  • Have not applied for an immigrant visa to the U.S. (Except Diversity Visa or visa lottery) in the last five years. 
  •  Must not hold a U.S. legal permanent resident or a U.S. citizen.

The preferences go with applicants who:

  • Demonstrate themselves as emerging leaders in their selected professional track via their work experience, community activities, volunteer experience, and education.
  • Agree to return to their home countries to share knowledge and experience with women and girls.
  • Have no prior or limited experience in the United States.
  • Prove a record of public service or voluntary works in their communities.
  • Show a track record of entrepreneurialism and commitment to innovation.
  • Demonstrate interest in participating in exchange programs, exhibit maturity and confidence, and welcome opportunities for new partnership development and mentoring. 

Selection Process

An independent selection committee composed of industry leaders and regional experts will review applications against the eligibility criteria. The United States Embassy personnel in the applicant’s country of permanent residence will interview the semi-finalists.
