The SOA/EDF Leadership for Climate-Resilient Fisheries Fellowship 2023 is now accepting applications. The Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) are partnering to provide a yearlong Fellowship to early-career entrepreneurs and organizations working on projects anywhere in the world that benefit fisheries and promote their ecological, socioeconomic, and community resilience to climate change.
Fellows are given a stipend as well as exclusive access to mentorship and online courses to help them build new leadership and technical abilities. SOA and EDF hope to create an ecosystem of fisheries-focused leaders who will boost resilience to the effects of climate change through the fellowship.

Through this program, fellows gain:
- A common knowledge of the effects of climate change on fisheries, and how to find and push solutions for increased resilience.
- Progress in their climate-resilient fisheries initiatives, based on a solid set of performance indicators that give benchmarks for sustainability and resilience.

Fellows Receive:
- Mentorship, skill-building seminars, and online tools from the EDF Fisheries Solutions Center provide a firmer foundation of technical and leadership abilities.
- A shared awareness of the effects of climate change on fisheries, as well as best practices for identifying and advancing solutions for increased resilience.
- Progress in their climate-resilient fisheries initiatives, based on a solid set of performance indicators that give guiding benchmarks for sustainability and resilience.
- 1:1 Mentoring is available upon request from EDF fisheries specialists and SOA mentors.
- The opportunity to network and meet with changemakers from all across the world.
Eligibilities
Open to applicants who:
- Are between the ages of 18 and 36, and/or have less than 10 years of relevant experience (this Fellowship is for early-career professionals).
- Are members of an organization.
- Are fluent in both written and spoken English.
- Commit to completing project deliverables and reporting on them by May 1, 2024.
- Participate in four virtual workshops in June, September, December, and March (2024).
- Request no more than $5,000 USD.
Program Dates:
- Program starting from June 1st, 2023 to June 1st, 2024.
- Progress Report: December 2023
- Final report: May 2024
- Fellows are expected to attend at least four virtual workshops (exact dates to be determined):
- Launch and introduction to climate-resilient fisheries concepts in June 2023.
- Alignment, connection, and troubleshooting in September 2023.
- Alignment, connection, and troubleshooting in December 2023.
- Closure and shared commitments in March 2024.
