Scholarships Available 

Several scholarships are offered for international applicants at SNU as follows:

Graduate Scholarship for Foreign Students (GSFS):

  • Details: Full tuition for up to 4 semesters and a monthly stipend of at least KRW 500,000 per year (varies by college/school).
  • Eligibility: International Admission Applicants.

SNU President Fellowship Program (SPF):

  • Details: Full tuition for up to 6 semesters, monthly stipends (KRW 1,500,000 – 2,000,000) for 3-4 years, round-trip airfare, health insurance, Korean language training, and childcare support.
  • Eligibility: International Admission applicants who are teaching staff at universities in developing countries without a Ph.D.

Admissions Requirements

The following are the requirements for applications:

A. International Admission I: (Neither the applicant nor the applicant’s parents are Korean citizens.)

  • Applicants must meet the following education requirements:
    • Master’s/Combined Master’s and Doctoral candidates must provide a Bachelor’s degree or higher
    • Doctoral candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher
    • Non-traditional credentials (e.g., self-education exams, homeschooling) are not eligible.
    • Graduates from Korean universities and those completing degrees by August 31, 2025, are eligible.
  • Nationality Requirement:
    • Applicant and both parents must be foreign citizens.
    • Former Korean citizens must renounce Korean nationality before March 6, 2025, with proof.

B. International Admission II (for Applicants who completed the entire curriculum abroad)

  • Applicants must meet the following education requirements:
    • Master’s/Combined Master’s and Doctoral Programs applicants must provide a Bachelor’s degree or higher
    • Doctoral Program applicants must have a Master’s degree or higher
    • Applicants with nontraditional education credentials (e.g., self-education exams, homeschooling) are not eligible, except if their courses were online due to COVID-19 (with proof).
    • Applicants who complete their degrees by August 31, 2025, and receive their degrees in September 2025 are eligible.
  • Applicants must have completed their entire education (elementary to bachelor’s level) outside Korea.
  • North Korean refugees must have completed their education in North Korea and/or foreign countries.
  • North Korean refugees must submit a Certificate of Academic Record for North Korean Refugees:
  • Primary and Secondary Education: Issued by Metropolitan/Provincial Offices of Education.
  • Higher Education (Bachelor’s): Approved by the Ministry of Unification and Ministry of Education.
  • Foreign applicants eligible for International Admissions I are advised to apply under that category.
  • Foreigners outside Korea may face challenges obtaining the required documents for International Admissions II (e.g., Certificate of Entry and Departure).

Important Notes:

Applicants should consider these notes before applying:

  • Application Fee: Non-refundable and cannot be waived.
  • Single Application Rule: Multiple applications lead to disqualification.
  • English Course Availability: Contact the program/department directly.
  • Leave of Absence: Admitted students must consult their college.
  • Admission Validity: Offers apply only to the current semester, with no deferrals.
  • Mandatory Review: Admitted students must read the “Reference Guide for Admitted Students.”
  • Korean Proficiency Test: Required if notified; results may affect course selection.
  • Disqualification Reasons:
    • Failure to submit a valid graduation certificate.
    • Lack of Apostille/authentication for documents.
    • Incomplete submission of required original documents.
    • Paying tuition to multiple universities simultaneously.
    • Dual enrollment at another university post-admission.
    • Failure to register within the deadline.
    • Submission of false or altered documents at any stage.

Documents Requirement

Applicants must provide the following documents:

  • Application Form: Fill out online; ensure personal details match all other documents.
  • Personal Statement and Study Plan: Submit online (max 1,500 Korean characters or 600 English words); some programs require Korean.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation: Submit via designated website; one letter per recommender.
  • Proof of Language Proficiency: Submit TOPIK, TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.0, or proof of language-based coursework; specific programs require TOPIK Level 5-6.
  • Bachelor’s Degree Certificate (or Expected Graduation Certificate): Upload during application; final documents must be apostilled or embassy-certified.
  • Academic Transcript: Include all semesters; additional transcripts are needed for transfer credits.
