Opportunity Description

Crowd4SDG is a Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Action supported by the European Commission’s Science with and for Society (SwafS) program.
Applications are now open for the Open17 Challenge on Climate Justice 2022. Do you care deeply about climate justice, and do you have a project or idea to help people and communities prepare for climate change? Next, propose your initiative, prototype, or concept that uses crowdsourcing to address a particular Climate Justice issue. All of us are impacted by climate change, but not equally. It is likely to result in disparities between present and future generations and within and between nations. The phrase “climate justice” refers to the framing of global warming as an ethical and political problem, as opposed to a solely environmental or physical one. They are looking for suggestions for solutions that will improve everyone’s ability to prepare for climate change, especially the most vulnerable. You can influence national and regional policy by leveraging non-traditional data sources, such as social media, to present information about difficult and crucial circumstances.

Benefits of The Program

There are two ways in which participants in the Open17 Challenge might be compensated for their efforts:

  • The top proposals for the Challenge on the Goodwall platform (August–September 2022) will receive weekly awards of €100 based on the four criteria, as determined by two members of the Crowd4SDG consortium or…
  • Travel and lodging to attend a conference in Geneva (March 2023) to present proposals following the judgment of a jury of both consortium and outside members.
  • In August through September, weekly awards for pitches posted on the social network Goodwall might total up to €2500. Members of the two best teams will get up to €7500 for airfare and lodging to attend the March conference.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Anyone worldwide is eligible to participate in the Open17 Challenge.
  • You must be at least 16 or older to apply.
  • Participants should have a strong command of written and spoken English, and applications must be submitted in English.

Selection Criteria

Your concept was chosen based on its novelty, relevance, viability, and proper use of crowdsourcing:

  • Crowdsourcing – Describe how you’ll motivate more people to participate in achieving your concept, whether it’s through data collection or group action.
  • Feasibility – Be ambitious yet practical; your plan should be something you can accomplish with a bit of assistance from a few like-minded individuals.
  • Relevance – Your proposal should address climate justice by assisting those most at risk from the effects of climate change in creating resilient communities.
  • Novelty – Your idea should be the focus of your proposal. Instead of discussing generic issues, describe a specific problem you wish to fix in your neighborhood.

The Open17 Challenge will employ these selection criteria at all levels, namely to choose individuals for €100 prizes in August and September 2022 and to pay for travel and lodging for members of the best teams invited to the Geneva conference in March 2023.
