The Leadership in Government Fellowships Program of the Open Society Foundations was established in 2016 to support former senior-level government staff in the United States who have recently left public service and have played a significant role in advancing social change from within government in the United States at the city, county, tribal, state, and federal levels.

They are looking for public sector leaders who are passionate about using this fellowship opportunity to reflect on their time in government and to work on a project that advances policy ideas and incorporates their unique perspectives on making change from within government into public discourse.

Benefits:

  • Fellows will receive a stipend in a general range of $110,000 to $150,000 depending on percentage of time committed to the project. Projects are either 12 or 18 months in duration.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Fellowship candidates for the Leadership in Government program must have held full-time, senior government jobs in the US and its territories.
  • Public servants who have recently left the government (or within the last two years) or who will finish their term before their fellowship begins and have held senior management or the position of chief executive officer of their agency or office are their ideal candidates.
  • Candidates should ideally have an eye toward becoming change agents in government or want to use their experience in public service to pursue a career in advocacy.
  • All political parties and ideologies are welcome to apply, but they especially encourage those who can think differently and approach social change from a different perspective.
  • The following traits will be exhibited by successful applicants: a strong desire to contribute to public discourse, a passion for problem-solving and policy implementation, a desire to advance ideas beyond their previous jurisdictions, and a keen interest in reflecting on their time spent serving in government. Additionally, applicants should be interested in advancing Open Society—U.S.’s strategic goal of constructing and sustaining a multiracial democracy, as well as in positively interacting with their grantee network.
  • Please be aware that grants to fellows are deemed public information, and in accordance with IRS regulations, the fellow’s name and project description will appear on the Open Society Foundations’ tax returns.
