Citizens of specified developing nations with appropriate professional expertise and a history of supporting their governments’ development efforts are eligible for the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP).   • At the beginning of your study program and shortly after the scholarship’s conclusion, economy-class air travel from your home country to the host university is included. Scholars will also get two round-trip airline tickets and a $600 US travel reimbursement for each trip.
  • Your graduate program’s tuition and the price of your university-provided basic health insurance.
  • During the scholarship period, a monthly subsistence grant to cover all living costs is provided in school (accommodations, food, etc., including books). Depending on the host nation, the allowance varies in size.

Eligibility for Scholarship

Application requirements for the Joint Japan/World Bank Scholarship (JJ/WBGSP) include the following:

  • Be a citizen of a developing country on this list that is a member of the World Bank.
  • Not possess dual citizenship in any advanced nation.
  • Possess good health.
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) acquired at least three years before the application deadline.
  • Have a Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree and at least three years of recent job experience in development.
  • Be paid, full-time employment doing development-related work when you submit your scholarship application.
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent university) that you earned no more than three years ago and obtained no more than six years before the application deadline.
  • Before submitting your application, you must attach the letter of admission.

The following people are NOT eligible to apply for this opportunity:

  • Executive Director, alternate, or staff at World Bank Group
  • Close relative of the aforementioned (defined as Mother, Father, Sister, Half-sister, Brother, Half-brother, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle, Niece, or Nephew)
  • Previously declined or did not graduate from JJ/WBGSP scholarship

Selection Process and Criteria

Following are the selection process and criteria details for the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program:

  • Two assessors independently review each eligible application, scoring on a scale of 1 to 10 based on the following factors:
    1. Professional Experience (30%)
    2. Recommendations (30%)
    3. Commitment to Home Country (30%)
    4. Education Background (10%)
  • Finalists will be selected based on the following:
    • Geographical distribution
    • Gender distribution
    • Unusual circumstances/hardships
    • Limited access to financial resources
  • The list of finalists was presented to the JJ/WBGSP Steering Committee for approval.
  • Winners will be notified after Steering Committee approval.
Documents Requirement for Scholarship
  • Submit One Online Application (found in apply now button below)
  • Two recommendation letters,
  • Evidence demonstrating the applicant’s eligibility in the years of most recent development-related activity.
  • The applicant’s Bachelor’s degree transcript and, if relevant, the applicant’s most recent graduate degree transcript. (Never upload or use a transcript as a replacement for a diploma.
  • Unconditional admission letter to the JJ/WBGSP participating master’s program for the forthcoming academic year, excluding financial considerations.
