- Injury Prevention for Children and Teens (free enrolling)
The most common causes of mortality for children and adolescents are injuries, including car accidents, teenage violence, and suicide. However, by widely implementing evidence-based procedures and regulations, virtually all of these injuries may be avoided. Pediatric injury prevention involves the combined efforts of parents, teachers, child care providers, nurses, doctors, social workers, and public health professionals. Despite its importance, there is currently relatively little training available in injury prevention science. Through compelling, succinct, current lectures, interviews, and demonstrations from a multidisciplinary panel of nationally recognized injury prevention experts, this course provides a solid foundation for pediatric injury prevention and will deepen your understanding of this important public health issue. Healthcare, kinesiology, public policy, social work, pharmacy, dentistry, and psychology are among the many professions and levels of training this course is intended for. Parents, coaches, instructors, and those who offer child care should all take the course.

- Sleep: Neurobiology, Medicine, and Society (free enrolling)
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the most recent knowledge on the biological, individual, and social significance of sleep. The fact that the quality of the previous night’s sleep is the strongest predictor of performance throughout the daytime emphasizes the importance of personal significance. The first half of the course provides an overview of the neurological underpinnings of sleep regulation, which are actively generated by the brain. The course explains at the molecular level how sleep deprivation, jet lag, and drugs like alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine affect alertness and sleep. The second part of the course deals with the medical treatment of sleep disorders and sleep-dependent alterations in physiology. Disorders of excessive drowsiness, sleeplessness, and sleep-related alterations in autonomic control will receive special attention. Chronic sleep loss affects immunity and may lead to obesity. The importance of sleep for preventative medicine is highlighted in this second segment of the lesson, which also notes that deaths from all causes are most common between 4:00 and 6:00 a.m. In the last lesson of the course, the social significance of sleep will be discussed. One operator’s error can have catastrophic negative effects on public health and safety in a society that is becoming more sophisticated and technologically oriented. It is well documented that fatigue-related performance declines had a causative role in nuclear power plant failures, transportation mishaps, and medical blunders.

- Advanced Literature Searching in The Health Sciences (free enrolling)
Learn how to do sophisticated literature searches in the health sciences. This course was created by information specialist Mark MacEachern and a group of other health sciences information specialists at the University of Michigan for anybody in charge of creating literature searches as part of their study. Professionals and researchers in the health sciences would particularly benefit from this course’s improved reporting and general quality of their literature searches. You will have a greater understanding of the significance of literature searches in health sciences work, the elements of efficient searches, and recommended practices to adequately describe the search process after finishing the course.
