Opportunity Description

The Max Planck Institute for International Law and Comparative Public Law (MPIL) is a leading German institution in the fields of European law, comparative public law, and international law. Its researchers carry out world-class research in whole areas of public law. MPIL also hosts many guests from many countries, who significantly enrich the academic discourse and life of the Institute.

MPIL offers an internship opportunity to a limited number of undergraduate and graduates international students. MPIL internship participants can take this program on a voluntary basis or as a part of their degree requirement. By participating, students would be familiar with academic legal skills in the fields of international law, comparative public law, and European law and will improve their professional skills and networking capacities for future career paths.

Interns enrolled in a degree program at a university can apply for MPIL Internship Program to become familiar with academic legal skills in the fields of law and improve their professional skills and networking capacities for future career paths. Also, they will receive € 300 per month subject to income tax and social insurance regulations in Germany.

Eligibility Requirements

The MPIL seeks highly motivated interns who meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a full-time bachelor’s or graduate degree program, preferably in law or related discipline, in a university during the proposed period of internship.
  • Must not be a Ph.D. candidate
  • Obtain top position among their degree program students
  • Demonstrate research and drafting skills
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English (C1 Level). Other EU languages and German, in particular, is an asset
  • Be familiar with computer programs

Required Documents

All applicants should submit the following documents along with their application form through the mentioned email address:

  • CV and cover letter explaining applicant’s motivation and interest in applying to the Max Planck Institute and suggested time and duration of your stay
  • Copy of high school diploma with English translation
  • Copy of academic transcript with English translation and explanation of the university grading system

Note: Please note that incomplete applications and applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered. Also, remember that the MPIL does not participate in the Erasmus Placement Program. Please do not apply for the mentioned program through MPIL Internship Program.

Interns’ Tasks and Responsibilities 

Interns who participate in MPIL Internship Program have typical responsibilities and tasks as follows:

  • Do research activities in specific areas of law as mentioned in the description section
  • Assist in preparing contributions to academic meetings
  • Writing legal summaries of cases and texts
  • Participate in workshops and conferences
  • Do tailored research activities with the tutor or independently
  • Assist in research projects carried out at the Institute

Visa Issues
