Opportunity Description
Korea Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in North America is accepting applications. The KF Fellowship for Postdoctoral Research is intended to fund the full-time research of young scholars who have recently acquired a Ph.D. in a Korea-related area at a North American university or research center.

- All phases of academic research, including editing a Ph.D. dissertation for publication, are covered.
Eligibility Criteria for Korea Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship?
Each of the following conditions must be met by rising researchers with a recent Ph.D. in the social sciences, humanities, arts, or cultural studies on a Korea-related topic:
- Have a citizenship or permanent residency in a country other than Korea (Applicants must already have obtained permanent residency status as of January 2022.)
- Have not been appointed to a university position equivalent to or greater than that of a full-time lecturer or been designated as a senior researcher of any research institution
- Have received a Ph.D. within the last five years
- Ph.D. applicants who are expected to graduate by August 31, 2022, are also eligible to apply.
- Fellowship recipients are only eligible for the KF Postdoctoral Fellowship once. Those who have previously received the fellowship are not eligible to reapply.
Required Documents:
- CV
• Including information on academic record (including dissertation title), professional experience, previous fellowships and awards, and a list of research accomplishments and publications. - Detailed Research Proposal (max. 5 pages) It must include the following elements:
• Detailed summary of the proposed research study, including its objectives
• Research topic and its relevance in the subject of Korean studies
• Describe the chosen research methods and materials
• Describe the development made thus far and the level of progress expected over the fellowship time.
• Reasons why the applicant’s research project must be done at the connected school of choice
• A separate bibliography is required - A copy of the request(s) for a research stay made to an affiliated institution(s).
• Before completing the postdoctoral fellowship application, applicants must request a postdoctoral research stay at each institution (research institutions or universities) where they wish to conduct research. Each request must have a PDF copy attached to the online application package submitted to the Foundation.
• The applicant may submit a maximum of three requests.
• After applying, the listed institution(s) cannot be modified. - Acceptance letter from the affiliated institution
• Following confirmation, the candidate should provide a copy of the letter of acceptance to the Korea Foundation. - Ph.D. Dissertation
• Abstract for dissertation, table of contents, chapter summaries, one sample chapter, and publication plan. - Copy of Ph.D. diploma
• Those who received their Ph.D. degrees after the application deadline should submit a copy of the diploma by August 31, 2022. If the chosen fellow cannot do so by this deadline, the Foundation will withdraw its funding. - Academic transcript of graduate degree
- 3 Reference Letters (Including one from your Ph.D. dissertation supervisor)
Note:Â Before finishing the application process, applicants should contact their referees. The KF Online Application System will email the referee listed in the application. The email will ask the referee to create a letter of recommendation and upload it to the KF Online Application System. Remember that the deadline for submitting references is Tuesday, February 15, 2022. (18:00 KST).
Important Reminders:
- Fellowship recipients who receive research stipends under this program must conduct research at a major university in North America with a faculty member who has published in Korean Studies or at a university that offers a Korean Studies program and has a Korean Studies faculty and library collection.
- Fellowship recipients are not permitted to research the university where they received their Ph.D.
- Fellowship recipients may not hold fellowships from the Foundation or any other third-party organization simultaneously. Please be advised that if you acquire another scholarship from a third-party institution, the Foundation will discontinue its support and require reimbursement of the Foundation’s grant.
- Fellowship recipients must be admitted to the connected university during the semester specified on the application. Fellowship duration cannot be carried over to the following year.
- After receiving the acceptance notice, Korean nationals must email proof of their foreign citizenship or permanent residency to the KF program officer in charge of the program.
Fellowship Recipients’ Responsibilities:
- Full-time research
Fellowship recipients must devote their entire fellowship tenure to their research. They may, however, teach at the connected institution as long as their teaching duties do not interfere with the advancement of their research (limited to 1 course per term). - Participation in the affiliated institution’s academic activities
During their research stay, postdoctoral fellows must participate in Korea-related academic activities at the host university. - Submission of a final report
Fellowship recipients must submit a final report documenting their progress over the fellowship time within 7 days of the conclusion of the fellowship period, using the KF’s report form. - Further reporting requirements
Even after the fellowship period, fellowship recipients must report to the Foundation on any significant academic activity they are involved in and/or the status of their scholarly debut in academia. - Publication requirement
Fellowship recipients must update their Ph.D. dissertations during the fellowship year and publish them as a book or research paper within 4 years after the fellowship period’s conclusion.
Note:Â Following the completion of the fellowship period, the Korea Foundation will conduct an annual review of the beneficiaries’ research progress for three years. Fellows who fail to complete their commitments will be ineligible for future Korea Foundation assistance.
