Opportunity Description

The University of Alberta is now accepting applications for the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship from international doctoral candidates. The Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship at the University of Alberta in Canada is a $45,000 fund from the Killam Trusts Scholarships.

Outstanding students registered in or admissible to a doctoral program can apply for this one-year scholarship, subject to renewables in year two of the award. In addition, students can benefit from any applicable International Graduate Differential Fee and a certificate of acknowledgment. 

The Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship also includes an honorary status. If a student wins an external scholarship, s/he must accept the external award. Hence, the Killam Memorial Scholarship may become an honorary award and will be reduced or eliminated depending on the value of the external prize.

Benefits of the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship

  • Valued at up to $45,000 annually for the first two years of the program; if applicable, international graduate differential fees
  • Scholarship recipients will get a certificate attesting to their award.
  • The scholarship must begin on either May 1, 2025, or September 1, 2025.
  • Six weeks prior to the end of the first funding year, funding for the second year is contingent upon meeting eligibility requirements and having the renewal request submitted and approved through the GSMS Awards Portal.

Eligibility Criteria

All candidates should meet the following requirements to apply for the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship 2025:

  • Application is open to full-time doctoral students or those admissible to a doctoral program.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 12 months of graduate work (master’s or doctoral level) by May 1, 2025, or September 1, 2025.
  • Must not exceed 48 months in their doctoral program as of December 31, 2024.
  • Must have at least 18 months of full-time registration remaining after May 2025 (as the scholarship is for two years, subject to review after the first year).
  • Graduate months completed during a master’s program count toward the doctoral program for those who transferred.
  • There are no citizenship restrictions; all fields of study are eligible.
  • Applicants need a first-class academic standing (3.5 GPA or equivalent). GPA is based on current graded graduate coursework or admission GPA if no grades are available.
  • Scholarships can only be held once.

Nomination Procedure

The department must submit eligible nominations to the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) via the Graduate Studies Management System (GSMS) Awards Portal by February 13, 2025. Please note that departments with more than 100 current doctoral graduate students can submit a maximum of 5 nominations. In comparison, departments with fewer than 100 current doctoral graduate students can select a maximum of 3 nominations for the current year.

Adjudication Procedure

The GPS Graduate Scholarship Committee will adjudicate the competition and notify winners directly about their applications. The departments and students will not receive the final decisions until after the Killam Trustees meeting in May or early June 2025.

How to Apply for the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship?

To receive the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship and the Dorothy J Killam Memorial Graduate Prize, submit any requirements to the relevant department. Applicants should apply before the departmental deadline and complete the following. A complete application package includes the following:

  1. The Scholarship Application Form
  2. Two Reference Letters are completed and signed by each applicant’s referees. Applicants should also submit a maximum of two additional confidential letters of reference to accompany the standard letter of reference form.

Note: Current doctoral students of the University should select one referee from their graduate program supervisor. The referees should submit the reference letters directly to the student’s department;

  1. Update Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies. Except for the University of Alberta, all other institutions must submit copies of the official transcripts.
