The  Kaohsiung Medical University scholarships provide various financial aid, such as tuition, living expenses, and stipends. International students at Kaohsiung Medical University (K.M.U.) are eligible for the following scholarships:

  • K.M.U. Scholarships: A variety of stipend levels are available to applicants who are interested in the K.M.U. International Student Scholarship:
    • Type A: N.T.D. 200,000–260,000 annually (education, housing, and a monthly stipend included)
    • Type B: N.T.D. 80,000–140,000 annually (accommodation and tuition included)

Eligibilities

All applicants must meet these requirements:

For Bachelor’s Degree:

  1. Applicants must be of foreign nationality, never held Republic of China (R.O.C.) nationality, and must meet the following criteria:
    • Never studied in Taiwan as an overseas Chinese student.
    • Not placed by the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students for the current academic year.
  2. Dual R.O.C. nationality holders must meet additional residency requirements:
    • They have never had a household registration in Taiwan.
    • Renounced R.O.C. nationality at least eight years before application.
  3. Applicants must have resided overseas for at least six years (or eight years for medical-related programs) and spent no more than 120 days per year in Taiwan, with exceptions for certain approved activities.
  4. Applicants selected by foreign governments, organizations, or schools under Education Cooperation Framework Agreements may be exempt from some restrictions.

Educational Eligibility:

  1. School of Post-Baccalaureate Medicine:
    • Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher recognized by the Ministry of Education (M.O.E.) and verified by the R.O.C. representative office.
    • A certificate of enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program or higher via the International Students Admission Channel is required.
  2. Other Undergraduate Programs:
    • Must have a senior high school diploma from an overseas school, foreign or bilingual school in Taiwan, or a program offering a foreign curriculum at a domestic private senior secondary school, recognized by the M.O.E. and verified by the R.O.C. representative office.
For Graduate Degree Students:

Applicants must meet the following requirements as per the latest Regulations Regarding International Students Undertaking Studies in Taiwan:

  1. Foreign Nationality: Must never have held Republic of China (R.O.C.) nationality.
  2. Study History: Must not have undertaken studies in Taiwan as an overseas Chinese student.
  3. Placement: The University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students must not have placed them in the current academic year.

Additionally, applicants who have dual R.O.C. nationality must:

  • Never have had a household registration in Taiwan or
  • Have renounced their R.O.C. nationality at least eight years before application.

Exceptions: Resident requirements are waived for those selected by a foreign government, organization, or school under the Education Cooperation Framework Agreement who have never had a household registration in Taiwan.

Residency calculations exclude time spent in Taiwan under specific conditions, such as attending accredited training programs, language courses, exchange programs, or internships approved by relevant authorities.

Applicants from Hong Kong, Macao, or the Mainland Area must have resided overseas for at least six years (eight years for certain programs). Continuous residence is defined as spending no more than 120 days in Taiwan per calendar year, with specific exemptions for documented reasons.

Application Limit: International students can apply for admission only once. Subsequent applications must follow domestic student procedures unless:

  • Applying for a master’s or higher-level program after completing a previous program.
  • Re-applying after discontinuing studies or forfeiting student status within one year of admission to a bachelor’s or lower-level program.

Notes:

  • Students with unsatisfactory conduct or academic performance, or those who violated regulations resulting in discontinued studies or forfeited status, are not permitted to re-apply.

Educational Eligibility:

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet these academic qualities:

Master’s Program Applicants:
  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher from a university or independent college recognized by the Ministry of Education (M.O.E.).
  • Verification by an R.O.C. representative office is required.
  • A certificate of enrollment via the International Students Admission Channel is needed if you are previously enrolled.
Ph.D. Program Applicants:
  • Must have a Master’s degree or higher from a university or independent college recognized by M.O.E.
  • Verification by an R.O.C. representative office is required.
  • A certificate of enrollment via the International Students Admission Channel is needed if you are previously enrolled.

Required Documents

The following paperwork needs to be submitted by each applicant:

Bachelor’s 

Provide the following documents:

  1. Online Application Form and KMU Scholarship Application Form (if applicable)
    • Fill out online, print, sign, and upload.
    • Up to 3 programs can be applied for.
  2. The R.O.C. representative office verified the highest-level diploma.
    • You must include a Chinese or English translation if necessary.
    • Additional credentials required based on the region of study:
      • Mainland China: Adhere to specific regulations.
      • Hong Kong/Macao: Follow specific examination and recognition regulations.
      • Other areas: Refer to the specific rules for foreign academic credentials.
    • Current year graduates: Submit “certificate of expected graduation” or “certificate of enrollment.”
    • For international students with a bachelor’s degree or higher in Taiwan: Provide a certificate of “being enrolled via International Students Admission Channel.”
  3. Official transcripts verified by R.O.C. representative office.
    • Chinese or English translation if necessary.
    • Specific transcript requirements:
      • School of Post-Baccalaureate Medicine applicants: Provide Bachelor’s degree (or higher) transcripts of every semester.
      • Other Bachelor’s degree program applicants: Provide Junior & Senior High School transcripts.
      • Include an explanation of the grading system or provide KMU’s Grade Conversion Guide.
  4. A financial statement issued within the last 6 months showing financial sustainability for study in Taiwan (at least NT$120,000 / US$4,000) or proof of scholarship.
    • Bank statements must be officially issued and authenticated by the R.O.C. representative office (exceptions apply for Taiwanese banks or branches in Taiwan).
    • If the bank statement is not in the applicant’s name, a signed statement from the account holder is also required.
  5. Proof of Nationality
    • Birth certificate, parental identifications, documents showing parental relationships, and documents certifying the applicant’s nationality:
      • Photocopy of valid passport or certificate of nationality.
      • Photocopies of parents’ passports or certificates of nationality.
      • Taiwan Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) if applicable.
      • Forfeited Nationality Permit Certificate (for applicants with past R.O.C. nationality).
      • Certificate of Entry/Exit Dates (for applicants with dual nationality).
  6. Proof of Language Proficiency
    • Chinese proficiency certificate at TOCFL A2 or equivalent CEFR A2 level, or a school-issued document stating previous degree programs were conducted in Chinese.
    • Departments may have specific language proficiency requirements.
  7. Study plan in Chinese or English.
  8. Two letters of recommendation (in Chinese or English) to be submitted online by referees.
  9. Other documents specified by the department (if applicable).
  10. Passport-size photograph (close-up shot of head and shoulders, no hats/sunglasses/tinted glasses, taken within the last 12 months).
  11. Self-Check for Eligibility Verification & Declaration Form (as Appendix 3).
Master’s and PhD

The required documents are as following:

  1. Online Application Form and KMU Scholarship Application Form:
    • Fill out the online forms, print them, sign them, and upload them to the online system.
    • Up to 3 program applications allowed.
  2. Highest-level Diploma:
    • Verified by R.O.C. representative office.
    • Chinese or English translation is required if not in those languages.
    • Specific rules for academic credentials from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, and other areas.
    • Current-year graduates should submit “the certificate of expected graduation” or “the certificate of enrollment.”
    • International students who completed a bachelor’s or higher degree in Taiwan must provide a certificate of enrollment via the International Students Admission Channel.
  3. Official Transcripts:
    • Verified by R.O.C. representative office.
    • Chinese or English translation is required if not in those languages.
    • Master’s program applicants: Bachelor’s degree transcripts of every semester.
    • Ph.D. program applicants: Master’s degree transcripts of every semester.
    • Transcripts must include an explanation of the grading system.
  4. Financial Statement:
    • Issued within six months showing at least NT$ 120,000 / US$4,000 or proof of scholarship.
    • Must be authenticated by the R.O.C. representative office unless from a Taiwanese bank or branch in Taiwan.
    • A signed statement from the account holder is required if not in the applicant’s name.
  5. Proof of Nationality:
    • Birth certificate, identification of parents, and documents showing parental relationships.
    • Photocopy of a valid passport or certificate of nationality.
    • Photocopies of the applicant’s parents’ passports or certificates of nationality.
    • Taiwan Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), if applicable.
    • Forfeited Nationality Permit Certificate for at least 8 years, if applicable.
    • Certificate of Entry/Exit Dates, if applicable.
  6. Proof of Language Proficiency:
    • English proficiency certificate at CEFR B1 or above or a school-issued document stating previous degrees were in English.
    • Chinese proficiency certificate at TOCFL A2 or CEFR A2 or above or a school-issued document stating previous degrees were in Chinese.
    • Additional requirements are for departments/graduate institutes and for Resident Visa applications.
  7. Study Plan:
    • Written in Chinese or English.
  8. Two Letters of Recommendation:
    • Written in Chinese or English.
    • Referees are to submit recommendations online.
  9. Other Documents Specified by the Department or Graduate Institute.
  10. Passport Size Photograph:
    • Close-up shot of head and shoulders within the last 12 months, no hats/sunglasses/tinted glasses.
  11. Self-Check for Eligibility Verification & Declaration Form:
    • Complete and refer to Appendix 3.
  12. Application Checklist:
