Eligibilities for the Illinois Global Institute Language Fellowship

You must meet these criteria before applying for the opportunity:

  • The study of all levels, from beginner to advanced, of the approved languages listed above is supported by this scholarship. Candidates who are studying at the intermediate to advanced level will be given preference.
  • Candidates must be University of Illinois graduate students enrolled in degree-seeking programs and good standing academically.
  • Suppose they are approved for enrollment and matriculation for the 2024–2025 academic year or enrolled full-time at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. In that case, incoming graduate students are eligible to get a fellowship.

Documents Requirement

All candidates must provide the following documents to the appropriate center:

Personal Statement:

  • Explain your motivation for studying a particular language.
  • Share any prior experience with the language (if applicable) or other foreign languages.
  • Describe how the proposed language study aligns with your field of study.
  • Illustrate the connection between the language study and the specific area studies you are applying to.
  • Discuss how learning the language will contribute to your academic and professional goals.

Unofficial Transcripts:

  • Include unofficial transcripts with your application.

Letters of Recommendation:

  • Provide two letters of recommendation.
  • Ensure that one letter comes from your current advisor.
  • Direct your referees to submit their letters here.
  • 11:59 p.m. CT must submit letters of Recommendation on Friday, Feb. 24, 2025.
