Application is open for the Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship 2024 with Durham University. The Fellowship offers an exceptional early-career journalist a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is a nine-month Fellowship with Durham University that includes working on an investigative project inside the Reuters newsroom in London, Toronto, or New York, being mentored by top Reuters editors in the field, being supervised by Durham University, and having access to university academics and research resources. The applicant will be able to hone rigorous, fact-based research and reporting abilities through this Fellowship.

2024 Fellowship aims to begin as soon as possible after 1 March 2024, subject to the necessary immigration requirements fulfillment. The Fellowship program provides the opportunity to develop collaborations and ideas in a thriving community of journalists. The fellows also having the support of world-leading researchers.

Durham University will hire the selected applicant as a Fellow in the IAS-Institute of Advanced Studies. With the colleague’s support in the IAS, the Fellow will identify and make a researchers network to support their investigative journalism exercise at the University. Also, the Fellow will present a public seminar at the IAS to share their learnings from the Fellowship and support the understanding of journalism at the University.

• A chance to grow their ideas and partnerships in a vibrant community of journalists and academics, engaging with the University’s departments, institutes, and colleges
• For the duration of the Fellowship, the chosen candidate will work for Durham University while also completing a placement at Reuters’ London, Toronto, or New York newsroom or another appropriate partner of Reuters’ choosing.
• A suitable assigned academic mentor and supervisor will help the selected applicant at Durham University.
• The Fellowship includes a maximum £4,444 monthly salary, a £1,250 per month living stipend, and a one-off payment of £1,800 for travel and related expenses.
• If the selected candidate is already working for a news or media organization and takes a leave of absence to pursue the Fellowship, Durham University will, under certain conditions, reimburse their employer for temporary staff costs up to a maximum of £12,000.

Eligibility Criteria of Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship

All prospective fellows should meet the following criteria:

• They encourage submissions from all qualified applicants, regardless of location, since the Harry Evans Fellowship is a worldwide opportunity.
• Preference goes for applications from members of groups underrepresented in journalism.
• The successful applicant must comply with all applicable immigration restrictions since the Fellowship will occur physically.
• They promote applications from people who belong to underrepresented groups in the media.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria for the Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship are as follows:

• Early in their careers, qualified candidates will have professional journalistic experience of between two and five years
• The selection committee will evaluate the applications on a case-by-case basis when the applicant is not currently a journalist but is experienced in investigative reporting in a relevant professional field (for instance, managing human rights or other socio-political publications and campaigns, working as an author or researcher on reputable investigative work, developing in-field photo- or video-research projects, documentaries, or exhibitions).
• We welcome international candidates who may submit a project related to their own or another country. The project proposal is an essential criterion for selection. The primary purpose is to evaluate the candidate’s new judgment, originality, and conceptual abilities. The proposal should clearly describe to the Fellowship Committee what the story is about; what is original about it, including what the new findings would be; why the story is essential; what impact it might have; how the applicant would report it; and how they would tell it.
• The Committee will assess the feasibility of proposed projects in terms of the program’s location. Also, it is subject to meeting immigration requirements, will be based in London, Toronto, or New York. The Committee will evaluate whether to assign the winner to undertake their proposal or another investigative journalism project selected by Reuters. The successful candidate’s terms are at the Fellowship Committee’s discretion.

Required Documents

Fellows must submit these required documents:

• A brief statement of a maximum of 500 words outlining their background, their goals for the Fellowship, and how their vision of journalism aligns with that of the Fellowship
• A thorough proposal for an investigation project the applicant wants to conduct during the Fellowship (up to 800 words).
• A one or two-page CV or résumé including a link to the LinkedIn profile of the applicant.
• Up to four published examples of work, two of which should be text-based.
• A letter of recommendation from an editor with close work experience, assessing their abilities and potential as an investigative journalist
