Cassava Republic Press is pleased to announce the launch of our inaugural $20,000 Global Black Women’s Non-Fiction Manuscript Prize, which is dedicated to outstanding works by Black women (cis, trans, and genderqueer).

The prize is part of the publishing house’s mission to connect Africa and the African diaspora. The prize, with its high reward value and non-fiction concentration, is a first in the field of Black women’s letters, not only globally but also historically.

Objectives:

Their goal is to publish Black women authors and thinkers, both established and up-and-coming, from throughout the globe, with an emphasis on critical ideas that cut across time and geography.

Benefits:

  • The Global Black Women’s Non-Fiction Manuscript Prize winner will be awarded a publishing contract with Cassava Republic Press along with a $20,000 advance.
  • The combined prize value of $30,000 will be increased for the two runners-up writers, who will each get a $5000 advance and publication by Cassava Republic Press.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to female Black writers who are at least 18 years old, or older.
  • Reside anyplace in the globe.
  • Their goal is to support and publish Black women writers who produce rigorous, attractive, intelligent, and creative work that bridges the gap between “creativity” and “theory.”
  • Although they are not an academic publisher, they do accept submissions from scholars who are writing for general readers. The critical ideas that could otherwise go unpublished or be restricted to academic circles or smaller audiences are what they hope to magnify and unearth. Crucially, they encourage work that will enthrall and challenge their readers in their quest for innovative critical writing and knowledge-making for a wide readership.
  • Simple memoirs are not acceptable to us, but submissions that combine theory with first-hand accounts of personal experiences are encouraged.
