The Future Rising Fellowship Program 2022 by Girl Rising is now accepting applications. The Future Rising Fellowship is a year-long online program for young people aged 17 to 24 who want to tell stories about climate change, environmental justice, and gender equity. Fellows must complete a narrative project that highlights their work or tells the story of girls and women who are innovating and working to address the effects of climate change and environmental injustice during their time with the program. This year’s Fellowship will be focused on either Food and Water Security or Local Climate Solutions. As a result, applicants should submit narrative/storytelling projects that focus on one of these two areas.

During the year-long Fellowship, fellows will:
  • Get financial, professional, and creative assistance.
  • Join a global community that is expanding.
  • Attend monthly gatherings and storytelling workshops.
  • Make a narrative piece about gender equity and climate change.
Benefits of Future Rising Fellowship Program:
  • Each fellow will be paid a $5,000 stipend and eligible to apply for a small additional grant to cover direct project costs and materials.
  •  The Future Rising team will be on hand regularly to assist you with developing and executing your story projects.
Who is eligible for the Future Rising Fellowship Program?
  • You can be from anywhere on the planet.
  • Be between 17 to 24 years old.
  • You are dedicated, resourceful, collaborative, and driven.
  • You’re a storyteller who cares about gender equity and climate justice, or you’re a climate activist/conservationist/educator/community organizer who has a story to tell about girls’ education, gender equity, or climate justice.
  • You’re working on a project that uses the power of educated girls and women to help communities build climate resilience. Or perhaps you’re telling a story about strong women and girls leading efforts to improve sustainability and stability in their communities.
  • You can follow the Fellowship’s schedule.
  • You must have internet access to participate in regular virtual convening and communicate with Future Rising staff and fellows.
  • It is necessary to be able to speak and understand conversational English.
Eligible Story Types:
  • Stories about girls and women leading local efforts to combat climate change’s effects.
  • Stories about indigenous knowledge and natural solutions
  • Stories about young women and girls innovating or leading in their communities to ensure food and water security.
  • Stories in either rural or urban settings highlight environmental justice and access to food and water.
  • Stories in either rural or urban settings that highlight local climate crisis issues
  • Stories that draw attention to the indirect or hidden links between food and water scarcity and girls’ lives, particularly harmful gendered norms such as child marriage.
  • Stories about the ramifications of food and water scarcity.
  • Stories about how local climate change has impacted girls and women.
