Opportunity Description
1. ETH4D Visiting Scientist Grant:
ETH4D provides grants for visiting scientists belonging to academic institutions in low—and lower-middle-income countries. The visiting scientist may visit ETH Zurich for a short research stay or to attend a conference or workshop organized by ETH Zurich scientists.
This program invites colleagues from low-income countries to ETH Zurich for a research stay or to participate in a conference or workshop.

Main Applicant for this Grant:
Senior scientists and lecturers from ETH Zurich have been employed at least 50% of the time. The call is available to researchers from all ETH disciplines.
Total Amount of the Grant:
Up to 10K CHF
Eligibility Criteria for the Visiting Grant:
- The visiting scientist must be affiliated with an institution in a country classified under the categories according to the DAC list of the OECD (Afghanistan included). Preference will be given to “least developed,” “low-income,” and “lower-middle-income” countries.
- Has existing or planned research collaborations with the hosting professor.
- Proven academic qualifications.
Research Stay Requirements
- Project description and goals to be achieved during the research stay.
- Timeframe and work plan.
- Description of:
The added value of conducting research at ETH Zurich for the individual career development of visiting scientists.
How the acquired knowledge might be used in the context of visiting scientist’s research and dissemination at home institution.
Interest in hosting a professor to host this scientist, including potential follow-up activities after the stay.
Conference/Workshop Attendance
- Expected benefit for the institutional partnership between ETH Zurich and the candidate’s institution.
- Relevance of the conference or workshop for the candidate’s research and
career development.
Selection
The ETH4D Committee reviews all applications for Exchanges and Scholarships. The notification letter will be sent to the applicant within two months of the submission deadline.
Reporting
Following project completion, the candidate must submit two final reports to ETH4D:
- Technical report: One page outlining the visit, the lessons learned, the difficulties encountered, and the planned follow-up actions (emphasizing individual and institutional capacity building).
- Financial report: All expenses must be listed and documented with receipts.
Required Documents
- Description of the Research Stay or Conference/Workshop Attendance (1-2 pages).
- Budget (using this template).
- CVs of all involved persons (1-2 pages each).
- Letter of support from ETH professor.

2. ETH4D Teaching Stay Grant
ETH for Development (ETH4D) encourages teaching activities by ETH scientists or ETH emeriti at partner institutions in OECD-DAC-listed countries (priority will be given to least-developed, low-income, and lower-middle-income countries). These activities include delivering lectures, courses, or seminars and attending collaborative meetings.

Eligibility and Participant Countries
The ETH4D Teaching Stay Grant is open to:
- Doctoral candidates
- Senior scientists
- Assistant Professors
- SNSF Professors
- Titular Professors
- Professors on an ERC grant
- Professors Emeriti
The applicant must be hired at ETH Zurich at least in a 50% position (Does not apply to professors Emeriti). The applicant must fulfill the following requirements:
ETH scientist:
- Invitation from a university or research institute.
- Teaching assignment at ETH Zurich.
ETH emeriti:
- No longer than 5 years retired.
- Still active relationship with ETH Zurich
- Teaching stays at a partner institution where an active link exists (e.g., through ETH scientists) and can be continued independently of the professor emeriti.
- Invitation from a university or research institute.
Required Documents
- Completed electronic application form.
- Description of the teaching stay (3000-6000 excl. space characters, using Arial/ size 11/ line pitch 1.15).
- Budget, including the applicant’s and partners’ contribution to the costs (in cash and in-kind) (use a budget template).
- Timeframe.
- CV of the applicant (1-2 pages).
- Support letter of the hosting university or research institute.
What should be included in the description of the teaching stay?
- Clear activities and aligning teaching stay objectives.
- Description of the teaching activity’s purpose and content indicating the relevance of the teaching stay.
- Point out the added value for students at the guest university/ research institute and ETH Zurich, including long-term perspectives and mutuality.
- Explanation of how the teaching activity fits into the curriculum of the guest university/research institute and how it is accredited.
Selection Procedure
The ETH4D Exchanges and Scholarship Committee reviews all applications. The notification letter is sent to the applicant within two months of the submission deadline.
Reporting
reporting is the same as a visiting scientist grant.
