Opportunity Description

Applications are now being accepted for the Deutsche Welle DW Akademie Constructive Journalism Fellowship 2022. A group of TV and video journalists are being given a chance to participate in the Fellowship by DW Akademie. They bring together media professionals who want to interact with like-minded peers and learn more about compelling storytelling. The five-month Fellowship features a hybrid training structure with a one-week on-site session that will take place in March 2023, either in Germany or on the continent of Sub-Saharan Africa. If current COVID-19 laws prevent travel, they reserve the right to hold the in-person event online.

  • Upon completion of the Fellowship, DW Akademie will present a certificate to each participant.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates must reside in a Sub-Saharan African nation, possess a current passport, and be ready to travel for the program, which will take place in March 2023. 
  • English will be used for all communication and training sessions. Candidates must possess English language proficiency at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). 
  • All applicants should be capable of handling their equipment and working largely autonomously, and they should have several years of expertise in creating visual material. It is not necessary to have prior knowledge of constructive journalism.
  • To participate in the online workshop, each participant must access the technical resources required for their constructive visual project.

Fellows are expected to:

  • Participate in the online training between November 2022 and February 2023, as well as the on-site training in March 2023
  • Organize their visa for the on-site training
  • Create a constructive video
  • Engage with the mentor & find publication options during the video production phase
  • Prepare a fellowship report
  • Share your constructive journalism abilities with a colleague in a professional or casual context)

  • A letter of reference
  • An outline for 3 possible constructive stories for their production project. Ensure your stories highlight local approaches or responses to broader, global crises.
