The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers in the U.S. is an international fellowship program called the Cullman Center Fellowships. This excellent fellowship application is open to candidates whose work will benefit from access to the research collections at the Schwarzman Building, which is part of the New York Public Library (NYPL).

The Library is popular for the extraordinary comprehensiveness of its collections. This Library is one of the preeminent resources of the world for study in art, anthropology, geography, history, languages and literature, psychology, religion, philosophy, politics, popular culture, sociology, sports, and urban studies.

Each year the Cullman Centre’s Selection Committee awards fifteen Fellowships to outstanding scholars and writers, including academics, journalists, creative writers (novelists, playwrights, poets), independent scholars, translators, and visual artists. Foreign nationals familiar with English are welcome to apply.

The Fellowship candidates should work mainly at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building for the 2025-26 fellowship program. Candidates seeking funding for research leading directly to a degree are not eligible to apply.

The Cullman Center seeks top-quality writing to promote dynamic communication about scholarship and literature at the highest level—within the Center, in the Fellows’ published work, and public forums throughout the Library.

Fellows will mainly work at the Center for the duration of the Fellowship program, starting in September and ending in May. Furthermore, each Fellow will have the opportunity to give a talk over lunch on their current work-in-progress to the other Fellows and guests. They can also participate in other programs at The New York Public Library.

Awards and Benefits

• A Cullman Center will provide a stipend of up to $85,000 for each Fellow to use an office with a computer plus full access to the Library’s electronic and physical resources.
• During the Fellowship term, which runs from September to May, fellows are employed by the Center.
• Every Fellow addresses the other Fellows and a diverse group of invited visitors during a luncheon regarding their ongoing projects.
• They may also be asked to participate in additional activities offered by The New York Public Library.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants should meet the following criteria:

• Candidates should be outstanding scholars and writers, including academics, journalists, creative writers (novelists, playwrights, poets), independent scholars, translators, and visual artists.
• Foreign nationals familiar with English are welcome to apply.
• Applicants for the Fellowship must work primarily at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, not at other Library divisions. Those who are looking to sponsor research that will directly result in a degree are not qualified.
• The Cullman Center is in search of exceptional writing. It seeks to foster vibrant discourse on literature and research at the highest caliber within the Center, in open venues across the Library, and in the published works of the Fellows.
