The Cora Weiss Fellowship 2022 for Young Women Peace builders by the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP) is now accepting applications. The Fellowship, established in 2015, intends to promote the growth of young women peacebuilders while also ensuring that more young people share Cora’s vision of sustainable peace and gender equality as solid and vital components of our global culture. The Fellowship offers young women chances and venues to raise the issues and objectives of women and girls in their home country during international policy talks at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

  • Global advocacy at the United Nations to promote the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) 1325 on Women and Peace and Security and UNSCR 2250 on Youth and Peace and Security, as well as supporting resolutions and related laws and policies.
  • Localization of UNSCR 1325, national action planning on WPS, & the Young Women+ Leaders for Peace
  • Research and creation of training and advocacy materials on WPS, YPS, and humanitarian action
  • Administrative support in all aspects of GNWP operations.

Benefits:

  • The GNWP will pay for round-trip airfare from the applicant’s home country to New York and health insurance.
  • In addition, GNWP will provide the Fellow with a stipend to cover lodging and board, local transportation, and other personal expenditures for one year.

Eligibility Criteria:

The applicant must:

  • Be well-versed in UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on the Women, Peace, & Security Agenda, UNSCR 2250 on the Youth, Peace, & Security Agenda, the Sustaining Peace Resolutions, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the SDGs, & related laws and policies.
  • Have at least 2 years of policy advocacy experience on women’s rights, human rights, peace building, and other social justice problems, including the Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace, and Security, as well as associated laws and policies.
  • Have at least two years of program implementation experience in a developing country civil society group working on women’s rights, human rights, or peace building.
  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in international relations, women’s or gender studies, or any social sciences.
  • ave lived or worked in a developing or conflict-affected country for at least two years
  • Have excellent information and communication skills, as well as the creativity and enthusiasm to adapt evolving strategies that bring women’s, peace, and security issues to the public forum;
  • Have a collaborative spirit and the ability to work alone and as part of a team
  • Be highly driven with a positive attitude and the ability to manage deadlines and responsibilities.
  • Full command of the English language is required. Any other UN language proficiency is an asset.

Note: This Fellowship does not have any age limits. The Fellowship, on the other hand, is intended for applicants in the early phases of their professions and represents the viewpoints of youth in their country.

Application Requirements:
  • Filled out application form in English.
  • A two-page cover letter explaining why you are applying and how you will use the Fellowship’s learning and experience to assist in advocacy for women’s rights, gender equality, peace, and security in your country.
  • A writing sample of at least 1,500 words that demonstrates policy-oriented or scholarly writing and research.
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation Reference letters should include information such as how long the reference has known the candidate & in what capacity, remarks on the applicant’s potential to make a difference in the fields of women, peace, and security, and any relevant prior experience.

Selection Criteria:

The following criteria will be used to assess applicants:

  • Understanding of UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, as well as its supporting resolutions; The United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace, & Security Agenda, the Sustaining Peace Resolutions, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the SDGs, & related laws and programs
  • A strong interest in women’s, peace and security, and youth issues, as well as the capacity to communicate effectively and eloquently about these topics, both orally and in writing. Because the Fellowship will take place in New York, excellent English speaking and writing skills are necessary.
  • Experience directing program implementation on women’s rights, peace building, and other social justice problems in a developing country civil society group,
  • The ability to apply the skills and networking opportunities gained from this Fellowship in a similar setting, such as working with a civil society organization that works for women, peace, and security, for at least two years after the Fellowship ends;
  • Ability to relocate to New York City for one year;
  • Ability to travel to conflict-affected nations. (Note: Some countries where GNWP works are still experiencing violent conflicts, are affected by conflict aftermath, or have a high incidence of COVID-19.)
  • GNWP closely monitors the security and crises in all countries where it works to ensure that its workers, team members, and partners can travel safely. The Cora Weiss Fellow must sign a contract committing to travel.)
